No. 11 Men's Track and Field solid on day one of Razorback Team Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Hayden Baillio captured the shot put, the distance medley relay unit posted the fastest time in the nation and Keiron Stewart had the second-fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles in Friday's prelims to pace the 11th-ranked Men's Track and Field team on the opening day of the Razorback Team Invitational.
Texas, which is tied for fifth place with 27.50 points in the 11-team field, came into the two-day meet hoping to post a solid time in the distance medley relay and the foursome of Patrick McGregor, Zack Bilderback, Kyle Thompson and Joe Stilin did just that. They cruised to the win in the six-team race by posting a time of 9:31.82, which was nearly 13 seconds better than Arkansas' second-place effort (9:44.03) and close to 20 seconds below Texas Tech's nation-leading time of 9:51.10.
"It was a nice effort by those guys," head coach Bubba Thornton said. "This puts us in a good spot nationally and gives us a chance to concentrate on some other events."
The Longhorns' DMR time also ranks fourth in school history and was the fastest since Jacob Hernandez, Danzell Fortson, Mike Carmody and Jake Morse clocked a 9:30.77 at the 2009 Alex Wilson Invitational.
Baillio won his second-straight shot put event with a season-best toss of 62-10.50 (19.16m) on his second attempt to claim 10 points for the Longhorns. The senior All-American won the shot put at the season-opening Arkansas Dual meet two weeks ago.
Stewart put himself in position to score significant points for the Longhorns Saturday. The senior All-American clocked a 7.74, the same time he ran at the Arkansas Dual event, in Friday's opening heat of the 60-meter hurdles prelims. Stewart and Eddie Lovett of Florida, who had the fastest time (7.69) in the prelims, are among 16 competitors advancing to the semifinals.
"Hayden had a good night throwing and Keiron looked solid in the hurdles," Thornton said. "Keiron and Lovett should have a good battle tomorrow and we should have some good matchups in other events."
While the meet is scored, many of the teams do not have entries in events. The Longhorns did not have any athletes entered in Friday's 200 and 5,000 meters, and just one in the 60m, long jump and high jump.
Ryan Dohner (13:52.85) and Stilin (13:59.23) are already in possession of the third and fourth-fastest 5,000-meter times in the nation. Those were posted at last month's Hoosier Open.
Dohner will run the 3,000 meters Saturday, while Stilin is entered in the mile.
The day started off with junior Jake Wohlford and freshman Basil Fares competing in their first heptathlon of the season.
Wohlford finished the day in eighth (2,808 points) and Fares is 10th (2,762). The final three events will take place Saturday.
Victor Glaze II, Will Spence and Mark Thomas were the other Longhorns to hit the scoring column.
Glaze scored one point for finishing eighth in the high jump with a season-best mark of 6-9 (2.06m), Spence claimed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 58-6.50 (17.84m) to earn five points and Thomas collected 1.5 points when he tied for seventh in the pole vault with a clearance of 16-01.25 (4.91m).
Josh Brudnick qualified for the 60mh semis by clocking a time of 8.40 and Emerson Sanders reached the 60-meter semifinals with a 7.01.
Top-ranked Arkansas leads the team standings with 43 points, Nebraska is second with 40 and Georgia is third (39).
Saturday's action gets underway at 11 a.m. CST.
