Marchelle Davis scores in the 12th minute to power Texas over the Sooners on Sunday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
AUSTIN, Texas – The 25th-ranked Texas Soccer team completed its undefeated season at home with a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma on Sunday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The Longhorns also celebrated their two seniors, midfielder Gabby Zarnegar and forward Brenda Saucedo, who both earned starts in their final regular-season home game in Burnt Orange.
Marchelle Davis scored in the 12th minute, a header off a cross from Chantale Campbell, to give Texas (11-4-2, 5-1-1 Big 12 Conference) all it would need to edge the Sooners. Campbell volleyed the ball into the box and Davis made contact, sending a floater over the hands of OU goalkeeper Kassidie Stade, who was caught off her line.
It was the freshman forward's second goal of the season and Campbell's team-leading fifth assist.
Following a double-overtime tie with Oklahoma State on Friday night, Texas started the day slow, conceding the match's first shot and corner kick to OU in the first 10 minutes. But Davis' goal kicked the game into high gear for the Longhorns, who would go on to outshoot the Sooners 14-7 on the afternoon.
UT moved the ball well and kept pressure on the Oklahoma back line, particularly in the second half when the Longhorns fired off 10 shots and did not concede one to OU until the 87th minute. Texas created several quality opportunities to score in the second period, one of which came off a Campbell corner kick in the 56th minute. Campbell's cross found the head of Brooke Gilbert in position near the far post, but Gilbert's shot was blocked. Another came in the 68th minute when Zarnegar played a great ball into the box from the left side that Lindsey Meyer got her foot on, but the shot went high. Texas went on to set up three straight corner kicks in the 70th, 71st and 72nd minutes that culminated in a shot from Sharis Lachappelle that Stade was able to corral. In the 74th minute, keeper Abby Smith took a free kick from near the half line on the left side that hit the cross bar and was punched away by Stade.
Smith finished with four saves, three of which came in a 67-second stretch in the 87th and 88th minutes from a pair of shots from OU's Shiloh Price and one from Madison Saliba, for her seventh shutout of the season.
Texas will break from conference action when it takes on the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks in Nacogdoches on Friday at 7 p.m. The Longhorns will then conclude their regular and Big 12 seasons against Texas Tech in Lubbock on Nov. 1.
