AUSTIN, Texas -- Quarterback Clint Chelf went 16 of 22 for 197 yards through the air and ran for another 95 yards with two scores to lead the No. 12/10 Oklahoma State past No. 23/24 Texas Saturday afternoon.
Case McCoy went 26 of 39 for 221 yards for the Longhorns, but threw three interceptions that led to 14 points for the Cowboys, as Texas had its six-game winning streak snapped despite holding a 389-380 advantage in total yards of offense. The Longhorns (7-3, 6-1) fell into a second-place tie in the Big 12 standings with Oklahoma State (9-1, 6-1).
Though Texas fell behind early, the Longhorns used a heavy dose of Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron to stay close much of the first half. That duo combined to rush 22 times for 92 yards in the first half and Texas trailed just 14-10 after Brown's 7-yard touchdown run with 3:39 left, but OSU scored twice in the last 1:15 of the second quarter to take a commanding 28-10 lead going into the locker room.
Brown finished the game with 73 yards on 25 carries, while Bergeron had 49 yards on 10 carries. Mike Davis caught nine passes for 112 yards and moved past Quan Cosby for fourth place on Texas' career receiving yards list (2,615).
Trailing 14-3 after Chelf's second rushing touchdown of the game, Texas put together a 10-play, 75-yard drive to make it 14-10. The Longhorns rushed seven times on the drive and Brown capped it with the 7-yard touchdown run. Bergeron had 36 yards on four rushes, including a 21-yard run, on the drive.
Oklahoma State answered, however, when wide receiver Tracy Moore caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Chelf that deflected off safety Adrian Phillips' hand with 1:15 left in the first half. Then with 18 seconds left, McCoy was intercepted by Justin Gilbert who returned it 43 yards down the sideline for a touchdown to make it 28-10.
On the opening drive of the second half, McCoy went 5 of 6 for 64 yards -- including a 41-yard strike to Davis - and Texas marched down to the OSU 10-yard line. But the drive stalled and the Longhorns had to settle for a 27-yard field goal from Anthony Fera.
Oklahoma State responded with a field goal of its own on the ensuing drive, and Texas was unable to move the ball on offense its next five drives.
Oklahoma State picked off McCoy for the second time late in the third quarter -- this time with linebacker Caleb Lavey intercepting a short pass over the middle and returning it 23 yards. One play later, Chelf hit Moore for a 21-yard score to make it 38-13.
Field position played a major role. The Longhorns started inside their own 20-yard line on seven possessions and inside their 35 on all 14 possessions.
Oklahoma State marched 72 yards in seven plays on its second drive of the game to take an early 7-0 lead. Chelf accounted for all 72 yards on the drive -- 54 rushing and 18 passing -- and capped it off with an 18-yard TD run.
Texas responded by driving 60 yards down the field, but the drive stalled and Fera kicked a 39-yard field goal to make it 7-3.
Freshman quarterback Tyrone Swoopes made a late cameo and went 3 of 4 for 17 yards while rushing five times for 22 yards. Jaxon Shipley caught six passes for 43 yards and moved into seventh place on Texas' career receptions list (155).
Moore led the OSU receiving corps, finishing with 83 yards on six catches. Desmond Roland had 59 yards on 19 carries for the Cowboys.
