Chantale Campbell tallies her fourth goal of the season, Abby Smith records four saves on Wednesday afternoon in Kansas City.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The third-seeded Texas Soccer team fell 2-1 to sixth-seeded Oklahoma State in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Championship on Wednesday afternoon at Swope Soccer Village.
After going down a goal in the 20th minute, Texas was able to find a first-half equalizer from sophomore Chantale Campbell less than three minutes later but was unable to overcome a 54th-minute Cowgirl score that took the match to its final tally.
In the opening period, Krissi Killion got OSU on the board first when she received a pass at the top of the 18-yard box, got past the Texas back line and put in a shot from the left side. The advantage would not last long, however, as the Longhorns got an equalizer from Campbell in the 23rd minute. Aaron Strawser dribbled down the right side and passed to Jasmine Hart on the right side of the 18. Hart then sent a pass in the air to the center of the top of the box and found the head of Campbell, who put it home for her fourth goal of the season.
With the score tied coming out of halftime, it was the Cowgirls who struck next. Courtney Dike got past her defender at the top of the 18 and put the ball in from the right side.
The Longhorns created quality chances to score down to the final seconds of the match. With less than a minute to play in the game and Texas down a goal, Julia Dyche lined up for Texas' seventh corner kick of the afternoon and sent a ball into the box that UT turned into four consecutive shots from Campbell, Katie Gernsbacher, Julie Arnold and Brooke Gilbert. All four were blocked inside the six-yard box before the Cowgirls put it over their end line. Dyche took a second corner kick with 20 seconds remaining that was batted around in the box before being cleared by OSU as time expired.
Texas (12-6-2) tallied 19 shots in the game, the most for the Longhorns against a Big 12 opponent this season. Fifteen of them came in the second half with 11 being taken after OSU's second goal.
Abby Smith made four saves in goal for the Longhorns, including two impressive diving stops in the first half that kept the game tied until the intermission.
The Longhorns will now await selections for the NCAA tournament, which will take place Monday, Nov. 11 at 3:30 p.m.
