Jeffcoat voted team MVP, Davis wins Offensive Player of Year Award for second-straight year
The University of Texas football program celebrated the 2013 regular season with its annual banquet Friday night at the Frank Erwin Center.
The players selected senior defensive tackle Chris Whaley, senior safety Adrian Phillips, senior defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat and senior quarterback Case McCoy as the 2013 team captains for their outstanding leadership on and off the field.
Jeffcoat was voted both the George "Hook" McCullough Most Valuable Player and Mike Campbell Most Valuable Defensive Player by his teammates. He won or shared six of the 14 awards.
Jeffcoat leads the team in tackles (80), tackles for loss (21), sacks (12.0) and quarterback pressures (18) The Plano, Texas, native ranks first in the Big 12 and is tied for third in the FBS in sack (1.0 pg/12.0), as well as tied for 22nd nationally in fumbles recovered (0.25 pg/three). He captured the 2013 Ted Hendricks Award and was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press and league's coaches (shared with TCU's Jason Verrett).
For the second year in a row, senior wide receiver Mike Davis received the Darrell K Royal Most Valuable Offensive Player award. Davis has a team-high 715 receiving yards and eight touchdown receptions this season and has also moved into fourth place on UT's all-time career receiving yards list (2,741).
The team also voted Whaley and Jeffcoat, as well as sophomore defensive tackle Malcom Brown, the recipients of the Joseph W. Moore Tenacity Award for Defense.
In addition to those five awards, the Longhorn squad also voted on nine others.
Whaley's leadership was again recognized when the team selected him as the recipient of the Roy Williams – Joe Jamail Leadership Award. He won or shared five awards, including the Clyde Littlefield Most Team Spirited Defense award.
As for other offensive awards, senior offensive guard Mason Walters, along with senior offensive guard Trey Hopkins and junior running back Malcolm Brown were named as the honorees of the D. Harold Byrd Tenacity Award for Offense. This is the third year in a row that Walters has received that honor.
Senior place-kicker/punter Anthony Fera, a finalist for the Lou Groza Award, and junior cornerback Leroy Scott shared honors for the Frank Denius Most Valuable Special Teams Player. Fera has connected on 20 of 22 field goals this season and 44 of 45 extra points. For the season, Scott has 13 tackles, including five special teams tackles and earned special teams player of the week honors following his performance against Texas Tech (two tackles and one fumble recovery).
The D.X. Bible Most Team Spirited Offense honor was awarded to McCoy for the second year in a row.
Four coaches' choice awards were also presented at the banquet. McCoy garnered his third award of the evening, the Lan Hewlett Academic Award, for his excellence in the classroom.
Junior deep snapper Nate Boyer was honored with the Edith and Darrell K Royal Coca Cola Solid Citizen Award. This award is given to the Longhorn player who best represents all-around qualities reflected by community service, sportsmanship, and team leadership.
The Frank Medina Rehabilitation Award was presented to both Hopkins and Jeffcoat.
