WACO, Texas -- Malcolm Brown ran for 131 yards and Texas' defense kept Baylor's high-powered offense off the scoreboard for much of the game, but quarterback Bryce Petty threw two second half touchdowns to lead the No. 9/7 Bears to a 30-10 win on Saturday.
Playing for an outright Big 12 championship after Oklahoma knocked off Oklahoma State earlier in the day, Brown and the No. 23/24 Longhorns (8-4, 7-2) established the run game in the first half and were tied with the Bears, 3-3, at halftime.
But Petty led a 14-play, 77-yard touchdown drive to open the second half, then followed with another scoring drive after Texas went three-and-out, to give the Bears (11-1, 8-1) a 17-3 lead with 6:54 left in the third quarter.
After Baylor's Aaron Jones kicked a 42-yard field goal that made it 20-7, Jaxon Shipley gave the Texas offense life with a big play near the end of the third quarter, returning a punt 50 yards that set the Longhorns up with possession at the Baylor 11-yard line.
Case McCoy then converted a fourth-and-goal when he scrambled in the pocket and found Brown in the end zone for a 2-yard score that made it 20-10 early in the fourth quarter.
Baylor, though, answered with 9:18 left in the game on another field goal from Jones -- who was 3 of 5 on the night -- and Texas was unable to move the ball on its ensuing drive.
The Bears, who entered the game averaging 635.1 total yards (No. 1 in the FBS) and 55.4 points per game (No. 1 in the FBS), put the game out of reach after intercepting McCoy with 4:09 to play, setting up an 18-yard touchdown run by Glasco Martin. Baylor ended the game with 509 total yards, including 277 in the second half.
Brown rushed for 118 yards on 17 attempts in the first half, an average of 6.9 yards per carry. That helped Texas hold a 16:54 to 13:06 edge in time of possession in the first half.
The defense held strong in the first quarter, holding Baylor to just three points despite the Bears gaining 124 total yards and running 14 plays in Texas territory. The Longhorns stopped BU on three straight possessions - first with Leroy Scott breaking up a pass on a fake punt by the Bears, then when Jones missed a 49-yard field goal attempt, and finally with a three-and-out deep inside their own territory.
The Longhorns also limited Baylor to 62 rushing yards on 19 carries in the first half, while holding the Bears scoreless on their final six possessions of the half.
The Bears struck first with a field goal on their first possession, driving 68 yards on nine plays before the Longhorns' defense stopped Baylor at the 5-yard line. Aaron Jones kicked a 22-yard field goal for the early 3-0 lead.
On Texas' ensuing possession, the Longhorns got great field position after a 38-yard kick return from Duke Thomas. But after driving 35 yards on six plays, Anthony Fera had a 44-yard field goal attempt blocked, marking the senior's first miss since the Kansas State game on Sept. 21 (15 straight).
Texas again held Baylor without points early in the second quarter when Jones misfired from 35 yards.
The Longhorns knotted it up at 3 with 4:31 left in the first half when Fera drilled a 42-yard field goal following a 10-play, 47-yard drive. Brown accounted for 32 yards on five rushes on the drive.
Baylor struck quickly in the second half with a touchdown on its opening drive. Petty went 4 of 7 for 57 yards on the drive, capping it off with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Antwan Goodley on a third-and-9.
After Texas went three-and-out on its next possession, the Bears took over at the UT 47-yard line and extended their lead to 17-3 when Petty hit Levi Norwood for a 6-yard touchdown.
