AMES, Iowa - The Men's Track and Field team showed no ill effects from the one-day delay in the opening of the Big 12 Conference Indoor Championships.
The eighth-ranked Longhorns posted 47 points during Saturday's opening-day action, scoring in four of the five completed events to lead over second-place Kansas, which tallied 30.50. Oklahoma and Kansas State are tied for third with 26 points in a two-day meet postponed due to inclement weather.
The meet was originally scheduled to begin Friday at Iowa State's Lied Recreations Center, but a winter storm in the region delayed the arrival of Oklahoma State so the event was pushed back one day.
Texas came out strong in the first scored event of the meet, rolling up 19 points in the weight throw with all four of its entrants notching points.
Newcomer Clint Harris was second with a personal-best toss of 62 feet, one-quarter inch (18.90m) and Blake Jakobsson third with a career-best toss of 59-2 (18.03m). Hayden Baillio was fifth with a throw of 58-4 (17.78m) and Will Spence eighth in a personal-best 54-11 1/4 (16.74m).
Texas scored 19 more points in the final two events of the day.
Ryan Dohner finished fourth in the 5,000 meters by clocking a time of 13:59.21. Craig Lutz was fifth (14:09.26) and Will Nation seventh (14:12.45).
The Longhorns own the top time in the nation in the distance medley relay (9:31.82) and still managed to finish second in that event despite not utilizing its No. 1 unit.
Brady Turnbull, Zack Bilderback, Kyle Thompson and Kyle Merber combined to post a time of 9:42.61, just behind Oklahoma, which clocked a 9:42.37.
Merber went toe-to-toe with the Sooners' Patrick Casey and Texas Tech's Kennedy Kithuka, two of the top distance runners in the nation, on the final leg, which is normally taken by Joe Stilin, the UT record-holder in the mile and 3,000 meters.
"I'm really proud of the way our guys competed today," head coach Bubba Thornton said. "They were focused and it showed in the performances."
Reese Watson and Casey Wicker combined for nine points in the pole vault. Watson was tied for third after a clearance of 16-11.50 (5.17m) and Wicker tied for fifth (16-5.50/5.02m).
The Longhorns are also in good position to score in a number of events Sunday.
Texas has eight entries in the finals of six of Sunday's running events, including a pair in the 800 meters, 1,000m and mile.
Merber (1:51.60) and Kyle Thompson (1:52.53) each won heats in the 800-meter prelims, and Patrick McGregor (2:27.19) and Brady Turnbull (2:27.20) posted the third and fourth-best times, respectively, in the 1,000m.
Johannes Hock, who enrolled in school this semester, is also in the driver's seat during his first Big 12 competition. The freshman leads in his first-ever heptathlon with 3,345 points after posting the top mark in three of the four events competed on Saturday.
Stilin and McGregor, who runs the opening leg of the DMR, also advanced in the mile prelims and the Horns have the favorite in the 60-meter hurdles.
Baillio, a six time All-American, owns sixth-best mark in the nation and first in the Big 12 in the shot put (63-7.75/19.40m).
Senior Keiron Stewart, a five-time All-American, clocked the best time in the 60mh semis (7.75) and has already posted the top time in the Big 12 and fourth-best mark in the nation (7.66) this season.
In addition, Stewart advanced to the 60-meter final by posting a personal-best time of 6.73 in the semis.
"This meet can still go a number of different ways. There are a lot of good teams here," Thornton said. "But if we come out tomorrow with the same kind of desire, I feel good about our chances."
Sunday's action gets underway at 10 a.m. CST.
Notes:
- Texas has captured 10 indoor conference titles (five SWC/five Big 12) dating back to the first Southwest Conference Championships in 1974. The Horns have won five of the 16 Big 12 crowns awarded since the league started in 1996-97 (1999, 2006, `07, `08, `09). UT has finished in the top two at the Big 12 Indoor meet 10 times.
- Texas has claimed five of the 16 Big 12 heptathlon titles, including last season when Petter Olson won with 5,745 points. Aaron Fox won the inaugural title in 1997 and Donovan Kilmartin won three straight from 2005-07.
- The Longhorns have won six of the previous sixteen 60-meter hurdles championships at the league meet, including 2011 when Keiron Stewart took home gold with a school-record 7.66 (a mark he tied this season). David Aaron won in 1997, Jermaine Cooper captured three (2001-02, 04) and Nanad Loncar was victorious in 2005.
