AMES, Iowa - Backed by victories from a pair of seniors and strong performances from newcomers, the Men's Track and Field team captured the 2013 Big 12 Indoor Championships.
The eighth-ranked Longhorns led from start to finish in the two-day event which was held at Iowa State's Lied Recreation Center after being postponed one day.
Texas rolled up 135 points in winning its sixth Big 12 Indoor title. Oklahoma was second with 108.50 points and Kansas State third (96).
The one-day delay didn't deter the Horns, who claimed individual titles in three of the 19 events and placed at least two individuals among the top-five in six.
"I'm really proud of the guys," head coach Bubba Thornton said. "What a great team effort. We scored in every event but three and every guy on the team scored a point."
A six time All-American, senior Hayden Baillio claimed his first Big 12 title, winning the shot put by posting the second-best toss of his career - 64 feet, 5 inches (19.63m). Will Spence finished third with a personal-best mark of 61-5 (18.72m).
Baillio is nearly assured of a trip to next month's the NCAA Indoor Championships. He came into the meet tied for sixth (63-7.75/19.40m) on the 2013 national performance list and moved up to fourth. The top 16 performers in each individual event earn a bid to the national meet which is scheduled for March 8-9 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Senior Keiron Stewart cruised to his second Big 12 crown in the 60-meter hurdles. The five-time All-American, who won in 2011, clocked a time of 7.72. He also should advance to the NCAAs. He is already ranked fourth nationally with his school-record tying mark of 7.66 posted at the Tyson Invitational earlier this month.
Stewart was also sixth in the 60 meters (6.85).
Johannes Hock dominated the heptathlon, leading from start to finish and posting the top mark in four of the seven events over the last two days while collecting 5,858 points.
The freshman solidified the win by tying for first in the pole vault Sunday when he cleared a personal-best 16-1 3/4 (4.92m). He actually bettered his all-time high three times, also clearing 15-5 3/4 (4.72m) and 15-9 3/4 (4.82).
Hock is nearly assured of a trip to the NCAAs. His total ranks fourth on the 2013 performance list.
Jake Wohlford was in sixth in the heptathlon entering Sunday and reached fifth after clocking the second-best time in the 60-meter hurdles (8.16), but he did not clear a height in the pole vault. He did not take part in the 1,000 meters, though did run a leg on the 4x400-meter relay which finished seventh.
Another freshman, Victor Glaze II, saved his best for the conference meet. He posted a collegiate-best leap of 6-11 3/4 to earn fourth in the high jump.
Senior Patrick McGregor finished fourth in both the 1,000 meters (2:25.55) and mile (4:04.17).
Sophomore Kyle Thompson was second in the 800 (1:52.59), getting edged at the tape by Nick Rivera of Texas Tech (1:52.52) and freshman Brady Turnbull was third in the 1,000m in a time of 2:24.78.
"For me, this win is just a great example of the college experience," Thornton said. "We have just 12.6 scholarships and 26 guys on the travel squad and every one of them came through. This is something that will change their lives and they will be Longhorns forever."
Texas collected a meet-best 47 points on Saturday.
The Longhorns racked up 19 points in the weight throw, the first scored event of the meet, with all four of its entrants notching points, led by Clint Harris who was second.
The Horns also finished second in Saturday's distance medley relay and had three individuals - Ryan Dohner, Craig Lutz and Will Nation - score in the 5,000 meters.
The meet was scheduled to begin Friday, but was pushed back one day due to inclement weather that delayed the arrival of Oklahoma State.
Notes:
- Texas has captured 11 indoor conference titles (five SWC/six Big 12) dating back to the first Southwest Conference Championships in 1974. The Horns have won six of the 17 Big 12 crowns awarded since the league started in 1996-97 (1999, 2006, `07, `08, `09, '13). UT has finished in the top two at the Big 12 Indoor meet 11 times.
- The Longhorns point total was the third highest in Big 12 indoor meet history. Texas A&M had 154 points last season and Nebraska posted 141.67 in 2004. Hayden Baillio totaled a team-best 14 points with his victory in the shot put and fifth-place showing in the weight throw.
- Texas has claimed six of the 17 Big 12 heptathlon titles, including the last two. Petter Olson won in 2012 with 5,745 points and Johannes Hock's total of 5,858 this year ranks No. 10 on the UT all-time performers list. The mark also places Hock fourth on the all-time performers list. Aaron Fox won the inaugural title in 1997 and Donovan Kilmartin won three straight from 2005-07.
- The Longhorns have won seven of the seventeen 60-meter hurdles championships at the league meet, including two of the last three by Keiron Stewart (2001, 13). He set the school record (7.66) in his 2011 victory and matched it during the 2013 regular season. David Aaron won in 1997, Jermaine Cooper captured three (2001-02, 04) and Nanad Loncar was victorious in 2005.
- Hayden Baillio's shot put title was the eighth in school history at an indoor league championship. The Horns won the event for the second-straight season with Ryan Crouser bringing home the 2012 title with a toss of 65-3 1/2 (19.89). Crouser is redshirting during the indoor season, but will return during outdoors.
