BATON ROUGE, La. - Will Spence captured the shot put at Friday's LSU NCAA Indoor Qualifier meet with a personal-best toss of 61-9 (18.82m), but that may not be enough for him to earn a bid to next week's national championships.
The sophomore took the lead in the 10-man field on his third attempt, but was unable to improve on his final three throws.
Spence improved for the second-straight week. He had a then personal-best mark of the 61-5 (18.72m) in finishing third at the shot put during Sunday's final day of the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
That mark placed him No. 18 in the nation and Friday's toss did not improve his ranking. The top 16 marks in each individual event advance to the NCAA Indoor Championships which are scheduled for March 8-9 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Reese Watson also went to the LSU last-chance meet in hopes of reaching nationals in the pole vault, but the freshman finished tied for fourth with a clearance of 16-7 1/2 (5.07), well off his season-best of 17-3 (5.26m) which ranked tied for 39th nationally. Watson had cleared 17-7 (5.35m) indoors during high school and needed to reach 17-9 (5.41m) to have any chance to qualify.
Spence could make the national meet should anyone scratch due to injury. The final national qualifying list will be posted Sunday and medical scratches posted Tuesday.
