INDIANAPOLIS - Texas senior Laura Sogar paced the Longhorns by notching her third consecutive All-America finish in the 100-yard breaststroke Friday on day two of the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Through the second of the meet's three days, Texas sits in ninth place with 115 points. Georgia leads the competition with 300 points, and California sits closely behind in second place with 285 points. Tennessee is in third place with 263.5 points, and Arizona holds fourth place with 246 points.
Texas kicked off the second night of finals by taking second in the 200-yard medley relay consolation final in 1 minute, 37.58 seconds. Junior Sarah Denninghoff led off the relay in 24.86 before Sogar split 26.90 on the breaststroke. Junior Ellen Lobb split 23.72 on the butterfly leg before senior Kelsey Amundsen anchored in 22.10.
Junior Samantha Tucker made her first individual appearance in an evening final at the NCAA Championships, as the Austin native took seventh in the 200 freestyle consolation final in 1:46.26. Tucker qualified 13th during the preliminary session in 1:45.41.
Sogar qualified for the 100 breaststroke championship final for a third consecutive year and took sixth place in 59.25. A finalist at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, Sogar is seeded second in Saturday's 200 breaststroke.
Denninghoff just missed the school record in the 100 backstroke, but her mark of 51.86 was good for second place in the consolation final. The Arizona transfer qualified 11th during the preliminary round in 52.35.
Texas wrapped the evening by taking 10th place in the 800 freestyle relay, as the quartet of Tucker, Denninghoff, junior Alex Hooper and sophomore Kelsey LeNeave finished in 7:04.42.
The final day of the NCAA Championships kicks off Saturday at 10 a.m. Central.
POST-MEET COMMENTS
Texas head coach Carol Capitani
On Laura Sogar's third consecutive appearance in the 100 breaststroke championship final
Laura never takes being in the finals for granted. She learned a lot from this race tonight. The great thing about it is she went out after it. She needs to swim her stroke and her race, and then she'll be a lot better tomorrow. It's a tough lesson to learn, but she'll take it well. I think she is excited to be at her best Saturday morning.
On Sarah Denninghoff's 100 backstroke performance
Sarah did an amazing job of turning things around. I'm really proud of her 100 back tonight. She is knocking on the door of our school record. After a disappointing (200 medley) relay leadoff, she really turned things around and set the tone for the rest of the night. She had three tough events tonight, but even inside that last event, the 800 free relay, she raced hard. She went out after it. She left everything in the pool.
