As is tradition, the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays got underway Wednesday with the men's and women's multi-event competition.
Texas' Isaac Murphy sits in third place and teammate Jake Wohlford is 11th after day one of the decathlon at the 86th annual four-day event at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Half of the decathlon's 10 events were completed with Murphy, the defending champion, tallying 3,978 points, just seven behind second-place Romain Martin of Texas-Arlington. Curtis Beach of Duke is first with 4,219.
Wohlford posted 3,673 and had a personal-best 39-8 (12.09m) in the shot put.
Murphy did not register a personal best on the day, but had some solid marks. He opened the competition with a wind-aided 10.48, the top time in the field, and clocked a 48.94 in the 400 to move from fourth to third heading into Thursday.
"I feel good," Murphy said. "I have some events that I am looking forward to tomorrow. I will continue to do my best and see where I end up."
He missed out on some points in the long jump where his personal best is 23-11 1/2 (7.30m).
"I was disappointed in the long jump," Murphy said of his 22-9 (6.93m) effort. "I was ready to do it big, but I was not able to line it up today. I will keep moving though."
Murphy has some ground to make up to catch Beach, the 2012 NCAA heptathlon champion, but is more than capable of scoring in bunchs.
Murphy recorded a total of 8,067 at last year's Relays which is the second-highest mark in school history. Only 2012 Olympic silver medalist Trey Hardee had more in burnt orange, a collegiate-record 8,465 at the 2006 Texas Relays.
But Murphy, who is taking part in his first multi-event completion this season since his indoor eligibility concluded in 2012, needs only to post one of the top 24 marks in the nation to reach the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the third-straight season.
The decathlon will cap off Thursday with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500.
Erika Bougard of Mississippi State leads the heptathlon field with 3,570 points. Makeda Alcide of Arkansas is second with 3,480.
Bougard won the pentathlon earlier this month at the NCAA Indoor Championships and Alcide was third.
Along with the conclusion of the multi-events, many of the men's and women's collegiate throws events start at 12:30 p.m., with the distance races starting at 4:30 p.m.
