Senior Patrick McGregor held off Texas A&M's Henry Lelei in the final lap of the University distance medley relay Friday evening to claim the victory for Texas, one of four for the home team on the third day of the 86th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
The quartet of Trevor Van Ackeren, Zack Bilderback, Kyle Thompson and McGregor finished in 9:40.42, the eighth-best mark in school history.
"It was awesome," McGregor said of the Longhorns' seventh all-time win in this event at the Texas Relays. "We knew beforehand it was going to be us and Texas A&M. We knew those two on the end would be a great battle."
This was Van Ackeren's first taste of the Texas Relays and the rivalry with Texas A&M, which clocked a time of 9:41.34. The senior transfer from Princeton joined the team this season, though did not have indoor eligibility remaining.
"It was really exciting," Van Ackeren said. "We came out here yesterday and won the 4x800 so that was really fun. Friday brings an even bigger crowd. Everyday it seems it brings a bigger crowd, so we just wanted to rise to that occasion."
Shortly after claiming the DMR title, Texas won for just the second time ever in the 4x1500-meter relay when the team of Kyle Merber, Austin Bussing, Kevin Rayes and Brady Turnbull crossed the finish line in 15:36.86. The Longhorns had their only other victory in this event in 2011.
Along with three relays wins over the last two days, the Longhorns picked up a pair of individual victories Friday.
Sophomore Ryan Crouser cruised to victory in the University shot put (section A) with a personal-best throw of 67 1/2 (20.43m), a mark that ranks fifth on the school's all-time performance list and third on the performers chart. Crouser's winning mark was the best effort at the Texas Relays since Janus Robberts of SMU threw 67-8 3/4 (20.64m) in 2001.
Crouser's toss also ranks No. 1 in the nation this year and since the beginning of the 2012 outdoor season only one other collegiate performer has posted a better mark. Joe Kovacs of Penn State had a toss of 68-5 to win the 2012 Big Ten outdoor title.
After redshirting during the 2013 indoor season, Crouser was looking forward to this year's Texas Relays.
"It was big," said Crouser. "I've had this day marked on my calendar for a long time. During indoors I started feeling healthy again. I'm happy with the opener, it's a great place to start and I think I can definitely build off of it."
Teammate Will Spence also had a solid effort in the event, finishing sixth with a personal-best toss of 61-5 (18.72m).
Senior Jarard Bruner won the men's triple jump (section B) with a career-best leap of 50-11 1/2 (15.53m). Bruner's opening jump was long enough to hold on for the victory.
Prelims filled the morning slate, where senior Keiron Stewart finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.71, qualifying for Saturday's final.
In the men's high jump (section B) freshman Victor Glaze II placed fourth with his best collegiate jump of 6-11 3/4 (2.13m). Glaze matched the top height of the event but placed fourth by virtue of number of misses. Kansas' Jonathan Fuller topped Noel Frazier of California in a jump-off, clearing 6-10 3/4 (2.10m) to win the event.
Junior Casey Wicker placed 15th in a deep University pole vault (section A) with a clearance of 17-1 (5.21m). Sam Kendricks of Ole Miss set a Mike A. Myers Stadium record, clearing 19 3/4 (5.81m) to win the event.
