Women's Swimming and Diving earns four Big 12 postseason awards

IRVING, Texas - The Big 12 Conference announced Texas as the recipient of four postseason women's swimming and diving awards Friday evening.
UT senior Laura Sogar, the NCAA champion in the 200-yard breaststroke, was selected as the league's Women's Swimmer of the Year while redshirt junior diver Maren Taylorwas named the Women's Diver of the Year.
First-year head coach Carol Capitani was tabbed as the Big 12 Women's Swimming Coach of the Year, and 19th-year diving coach Matt Scoggin was selected as the Big 12 Women's Diving Coach of the Year for the sixth time.
Sogar became UT's first women's swimmer to win a national title since 2001. The Exeter, R.I., native defeated two former NCAA champions in the event, including the American record holder, Breeja Larson of Texas A&M.
Sogar also earned All-America honors in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays at the NCAA Championship. Sogar added Big 12 Conference titles in both breaststroke events and both medley relays.
In her first NCAA Championships appearance since dislocating her right elbow at the 2011 NCAA Championships, Taylor earned All-America honors by placing seventh in the one-meter diving event last month. The Arlington, Va., native added an honorable mention All-America award by taking 10th in the platform event at the NCAA Championships.
Capitani, Scoggin and assistant coach Roric Fink helped UT to a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Championships and its first league title since 2011. Nine swimmers earned All-America honors under Capitani's tutelage this season. Senior diver Shelby Cullinanjoined Taylor in earning All-America honors under Scoggin's guidance.
