RHODES, Iowa -- Wind continued to play a pivotal role at the Big 12 Championship Sunday morning as the Texas Women's Golf team carded a final round total of 24-over-par 312 to finish tied for sixth place at +72 (327-297-312=936). Sophomore Bertine Strauss led the Longhorns on the individual leaderboard with a 54-hole score of 11-over 227 (80-69-78) at The Harvester to finish tied for seventh place overall.
With her seventh-place finish, Strauss earned one of 12 All-Tournament Team honors that included the top 10 finishers and ties.
Senior Katelyn Sepmoree recorded a final round team-best 77 that included two birdies and seven bogeys. She was the only Longhorn without a double bogey as an incessant 25 mile per hour wind wreaked havoc on championship course. Sepmoree finished in 31st place at 23-over 239 (85-77-77).
Senior Desiree Dubreuil (81-76-79=236) finished tied for 22nd, and freshman Tezira Abe (81-81-78=240) and senior Madison Pressel (88-75-80=243) rounded out the Texas squad in 32nd and 37th places, respectively.
Oklahoma State (317-289-299=905, +41) edged Baylor (319-286-302=907) by two strokes for the team title. The Lady Bears' Lauren Taylor (74-68-71=213) ran away with medalist honors by eight strokes and was the only player to finish under par.
The Longhorns now await their NCAA Regional Championship site selection that comes on Monday, April 29, at 8 p.m. Central via NCAA.com.
POST-TOURNAMENT COMMENTS
Texas Head Coach Martha Richards
On Texas' 54-hole performance: I have to be honest, I think we've hit some better wind shots than I've seen us hit all year. We're really learning how to hit some those, although unfortunately it didn't reflect any in our scores. So we hit better wind shots, but our short games let us down a bit, which is surprising. The positive is I saw a lot better shot making in the wind, and now we go back and take the good from this tournament - there were a lot of good holes - and learn from the bad. We need to get rested. We've played three tournaments in about as many weeks, and we'll be ready for NCAA Regionals.
Sophomore Bertine Strauss
On her play in the Big 12 Championship: It's been a tough week. The weather has been brutal. Even though it wasn't as cold today, the wind was still quite a factor, especially next to the lake. Nonetheless, it's been fun. It's always good to compete against your conference rivals.
Senior Katelyn Sepmoree
On her final round performance: I hit the ball really well. The wind was blowing, but I've been working on my wind shots ever since I got here. I trusted my shot, and played like I had nothing to lose. Today was definitely my best day as far as ball striking went. I'm still struggling with putting, but my shots were better.
