WACO, Texas - Johannes Hock won the decathlon in record-setting fashion and newcomer Clint Harris captured the discus title to lead the Texas during Saturday's second day of the Big 12 Conference Track and Field Championships at Baylor.
Those two victories helped put the eighth-ranked Longhorns in first with 60.50 points in the three-day meet.
Hock, who also won the heptathlon during February's Big 12 Indoor meet, led from start to finish in the two-day decathlon, posting a meet-record 8,293 points, which is the best mark in the collegiate ranks this season, second best in school history and No. 2 in the world this year.
It was also the best collegiate mark since Ashton Eaton, the 2012 Olympic champion, posted a meet-record 8457 at 2010 NCAA Championships and ranks No. 7 on the all-time collegiate performance list.
"I felt like I could do well, but I'm really pleased with what turned out in the end." Hock said. "I knew my body was ready to do really well. After the 100 meters (on Friday) I felt I could really score big."
After posting the top mark in four of the five events Friday, Hock followed that performance up by recording the best time in the 110-meter hurdles (14.86) and top marks in the discus (176-8/53.85m) and pole vault (15-4.50/4.69m).
The discus throw was a personal-best, as was his time of 4:45.82 in the 1,500 meters, the final event of the day. He finished eighth in the 1,500 to collect 644 points, but could have gone scoreless in that event and still won the meet.
Reinis Kregers of Kansas State was second with 7,406 points and teammate Tomas Kirielius third with 7,189.
Harris, a transfer from Stephen F. Austin, won the open discus in a personal-best toss of 188-4 (57.40m). He was one of four Longhorns to score in the event. Ryan Crouser, who entered the meet with the top mark in the league, finished third with a throw of 181-10 (55.42m).
The Longhorns were dealt some bad news Saturday when Keiron Stewart, a six-time All-American and the favorite in the 110-meter hurdles, had to be scratched due to a left leg injury.
"He would have gone, but I said no," head coach Bubba Thornton said. "It's his trail leg. When you come down that's the leg you have to push off on. I just couldn't go there today. And the guys have been extremely protective of Keiron because they see the big picture for us nationally."
Texas should have a number of athletes in scoring range at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, including Stewart, who ranks No. 5 in the 110mh (13.51w) and Crouser, who has the top shot-put mark (67-0.50/20.43m) in the country.
But before getting to the national meet, the Longhorns will try and wrap up the Big 12 meet and stave off a number of teams, including Kansas State, which is second with 43 points. Texas is looking to sweep in the league indoor and outdoor titles.
"For every good moment that we had, we have one or two guys who felt like they fell a little short," Thornton said. "The team is working toward winning this thing. We have a big day tomorrow. We can't take anything for granted or someone will slip up. If we do our work we'll win it."
Victor Glaze II collected 5 1/2 points for the Longhorns Saturday when he finished tied for third in the high jump with a personal-best 7-1.50 (2.17m).
Texas will look for significant scoring in the shot put and pole vault Sunday as well as a number of running events.
Isaac Murphy, who finished fifth in the long jump Saturday, reached the 100-meter final by clocking a time of 10.60 in the prelims.
Zack Bilderback (400 meters), Kyle Thompson (800m) and Patrick McGregor (800m) all advanced from prelims to the finals.
Sunday's action at Hart-Patterson Track and Field Complex gets underway at 11 a.m.
Notes:
- The Longhorns are looking to sweep the league indoor and outdoor titles. Texas captured the indoor crown in February after leading from start to finish in the two-day event at Iowa State. Texas rolled up 135 points in winning its sixth Big 12 indoor title. Oklahoma was second with 108.50 points and Kansas State third (96). The Longhorns last won the league outdoor crown in 2006, which was the last year they made the indoor-outdoor sweep. They also swept in 1999.
- Johannes (pronounced YO-hahn-es) Hock became the sixth athlete, including third Longhorn, to sweep the multi-events at the Big 12 meets. He won the heptathlon in February with a total of 5,858 points, leading from start to finish. Aaron Fox won the heptathlon and decathlon in the 1997, the inaugural season of the Big 12, and Donovan Kilmartin duplicated the sweep in 2006. Knut Summerfeldt of Missouri (2003), Moritz Cleve of Kansas State (2009) and Nick Adcock of Missouri (2010) are the others to win both events in the same season. Hock broke Cleve's meet record (8,004) from the 2009 Big 12 Outdoor meet. In addition, the only Texas decathlon mark better than Hock's was Trey Hardee's collegiate record of 8,465 set at the 2006 Texas Relays.
- Clint Harris picked up the third Big 12 discus title for the Longhorns. Brian Robison won in 2006 and Derek Randall was victorious in 2007. This is also Harris' second conference title in the discus. He won the 2012 Southland Conference crown at Stephen F. Austin.
