NEW ORLEANS - Johannes Hock was named Monday as one of 10 men's semifinalists for The Bowerman, an award presented annually by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) to both the most outstanding male and female collegiate athletes in the nation.
Hock became just the second freshman to win the decathlon title earlier this month at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. His total of 8,267 points ranks ninth on the all-time collegiate list, ninth on the 2013 world performance list and third on the UT all-time performance chart
Tito Steiner of BYU was the only other freshman to win the NCAA decathlon, capturing the title in 1977.
But Hock's mark at the NCAAs wasn't even his best decathlon performance of the season. He led from start to finish at last month's Big 12 Championships, registering a meet-record 8,293 points. That total is No. 7 on the all-time collegiate list and eighth on the 2013 world performance chart.
Hock, who was voted the 2013 Big 12 Outdoor Outstanding Male Freshman of the Year, is the only freshman on The Bowerman semifinal list.
The native of Cologne, Germany, was sixth in the NCAA indoor heptathlon with a score of 5,873 and claimed the Big 12 heptathlon title with a score of 5,858.
Ryan Crouser, who won the NCAA outdoor shot-put title, joined Hock on the final regular-season Bowerman watch list, but was not a semifinalist.
The three finalists will be announced July 10. Voting for the final winner -- including an online fan vote -- will take place from late July to mid-August.
