Austin native Meghan Houston wins bronze for Team USA in the three-meter synchronized diving event.
KAZAN, Russia – University of Texas rising sophomore diver Meghan Houston teamed with University of Georgia diver Laura Ryan to win bronze for Team USA in the three-meter synchronized diving event Thursday at the World University Games.
Houston (Austin, Texas) and Ryan totaled 270.00 points among their five dives to edge Russia's Diana Chaplieva and Mariia Smirnova for the bronze medal. China's Chen Ye and Zheng Shuangxue won the gold with 314.40 points.Â
Houston and Ryan sat in fifth place through the first three rounds, but their performances on their next two dives – a reverse two-and-a-half somersault and a back two-and-a-half somersault – were enough to elevate them to third place overall. The bronze won by Houston and Ryan marked the first medal won by American divers in Kazan.
Also representing the United States, former Texas swimmer Laura Sogar qualified second for the 100m breaststroke semifinals and easily advanced to Friday's final. Sogar clocked 1:07.78 in the semifinals after winning her preliminary round heat in 1:08.74.Â
ESPN3.com will air live video of Sogar's 100m breaststroke final on Friday at approximately 10:51 a.m. CT. The video also will be available via the WatchESPN mobile application.
