Americans cruise to 10-0 victory over Great Britain in four innings.
BRAMPTON, Ontario - Texas rising sophomore Erin Shireman and the 2013 USA Softball Junior Women's National Team rolled to a 10-0 victory in four innings over Great Britain in the opener of the International Softball Federation X Junior Women's World Championship.
Team USA jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with a Sierra Romero RBI triple that scored Haylie McCleney. A run-scoring double from Danica Mercado brought home Andrea Hawkins in the second and the Americans added two more runs in the frame to take a 4-0 advantage after two.
In the bottom of the third, the squad tacked on six more runs to set up the run-rule victory. Designated hitter Sierra Lawrence collected the first RBI of the inning, scoring Ali Aguilar, who pinch ran for Jessica Plaza, with a triple. Hawkins registered her second hit of the game to score Lawrence, followed by a McCleney sacrifice fly to left that delivered Hawkins for a 7-0 cushion. The U.S. pushed the lead to 10-0 after Mercado scored on a wild pitch and Mysha Sataraka hit a two-run double. Shireman did not appear in the contest.
Cheridan Hawkins picked up the win in her first international appearance, throwing three innings, striking out nine and not surrendering a hit. Paige McDuffee closed the game with an inning of one-hit relief.
