AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 20 Texas Men's Tennis opens the 2014 dual-match season indoors against SMU on Saturday at 4 p.m. CT at the Weller Tennis Center.
The Longhorns enter Saturday having won 16 consecutive dual-match season openers, including a 5-2 victory over SMU in Dallas last season. It is the sixth season-opening match between Texas and SMU in head coach Michael Center's tenure at Texas, which began in 2000-01.
Led by All-Americans David Holiner and Søren Hess-Olesen, Texas features three ranked singles players (No. 24 George Goldhoff, No. 35 Lloyd Glasspool, No. 75 Hess-Olesen) and three ranked doubles teams (No. 5 Glasspool / Hess-Olesen, No. 35 David Holiner / Glasspool and No. 55 Goldhoff / Jacoby Lewis).
Saturday marks the second dual match played at the new Weller Tennis Center, which was dedicated on Feb. 28, 2013. Last season, Texas defeated Michigan 4-3 on March 9 after rain forced the match indoors.
Newcomers
Goldhoff headlines a pack of five Texas newcomers after debuting in the top-25 of the ITA singles rankings with four wins over ranked opponents this fall, including a win over then-No. 1 Mikelis Libietis (Tennessee) at the ITA All-American Championships in October.
Junior newcomers from France Adrien Berkowicz and Clement Homs had impressive results in the fall. Berkowicz won the UT Invitational and Homs is coming off a win over No. 72 Chris Simpson (LSU) at the Key Biscayne Invitational last week.
Junior Michael Riechmann will sit out the 2014 season after transferring from Brown and freshman William Jou has yet to play his first match as a Longhorn.
