No. 20 Texas 4, No. 15 Vanderbilt 0
Nashville, Tenn. • Currey Tennis Center
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Texas Men's Tennis notched its fourth consecutive shutout victory with a 4-0 win over host No. 15 Vanderbilt on Saturday at the indoor Currey Tennis Center.
Texas (4-0) has not lost a point in all four dual-match victories this season. UT's win over the 15th-ranked Commodores, who returned the majority of their roster from a NCAA regional semifinal run last season, marks the first win over a top-25 opponent since defeating No. 17 Tulsa on Jan. 20, 2013.
"Our team is really competing well -- they continue to fight for every ball and every point," head coach Michael Center said. "At the end of the match we brought a lot of fire-power by remaining physical. It's early in the season and we have a long way to go before realizing our goals, but we are going to fight for every point. These guys really believe in each other and they are looking for challenges."
Texas narrowly earned the doubles point as all three doubles matches went to a tiebreaker. After David Holiner and Nick Naumann lost on the No. 2 line, 5th-ranked Søren Hess-Olesen and Lloyd Glasspool defeated 2nd-ranked Gonzales Austin and Ryan Lipman, 6-5(5), on the No. 1 line. George Goldhoff and Jacoby Lewis clinched the doubles point for Texas with a win over Vandy's Suresh Eswaran and Kris Yee, 6-5(5).
Naumann made quick work of Vanderbilt's Kris Yee at No. 5 singles in straight sets (6-5, 6-5) to give UT a 2-0 lead. No. 24 Goldhoff and No. 35 Glasspool earned victories at the No. 3 and No. 2 singles lines, respectively, to clinch the match for the Longhorns.
"With the rule modifications this weekend [no-advantage scoring, tiebreaker at 5-5], a lot of matches are coming down to tiebreakers," Center said. "It comes down to who can execute and who can make plays under duress. I was very pleased with what I saw today. We were aggressive, but not wildly-aggressive."
The Longhorns will play No. 19 Wake Forest or No. 23 LSU on Sunday at 2 p.m. Central for an automatic berth in the ITA Indoor National Championship, which begins Feb. 14 in Houston. Live Scoring and tournament information for all the matches in Nashville this weekend will be available through VUCommodores.com.
