Freshman Ratnika Batra defeats a top-40 opponent in straight sets.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas freshman Ratnika Batra defeated a top-40 opponent in straight sets, but No. 1 Stanford (3-0) claimed a 6-1 win over the 17th-ranked Longhorns (3-1) Friday at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Stanford won the doubles point by winning at the first and second doubles positions. UT's Batra and Lina Padegimaite held match point over Stanford's Caroline Doyle and Krista Hardebeck, but the match was suspended given that Stanford had clinched the doubles point.
Stanford clinched the team victory behind consecutive victories at the second, third and fifth singles positions. Texas' Batra put the Horns on the board with her 6-2, 6-3 win over Stanford's 34th-ranked Doyle at fourth singles.
At No. 34, Doyle is the highest-ranked player to fall victim to the 77th-ranked Batra in her young Longhorns career. Batra's victory propelled her to 3-0 in dual matches.
Stanford closed out the match with straight-sets wins at the first and sixth singles positions.
Texas resumes dual-match play on Friday, Feb. 7 at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship at The University of Virginia. UT's first-round opponent has yet to be announced.
