Junior forward Chantale Campbell picks up her third goal of 2014 in the loss

FORT WORTH, Texas – Despite out-shooting the hosts by a commanding 27-11 total and getting a second half goal from junior forward Chantale Campbell, Texas (7-6-2, 2-3-0 Big 12 Conference) suffered a 3-1 defeat to TCU (8-5-3, 1-2-3 Big 12) on Friday night in front of the third-largest crowd in Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium history (2,553).

For Campbell the score was her third of the campaign, while junior forward Kelsey Shimmick was credited with her second assist of the year.

After each team made a few probing runs into offensive territory over the opening few minutes, it was Texas with the best early chance at 4:22. A pass into the middle dropped to Shimmick's feet at the top of the 18. She spun quickly and fired a shot that likely would have gone in had it not been saved by a TCU defender via a team save. Just seconds later, sophomore midfielder Julia Dyche followed up on the rebound with a drive from deep out in the middle, forcing a stop by Horned Frog keeper Vittoria Arnold.

The Longhorns continued to threaten in the 14th-minute as Dyche had a shot blocked. Soon after, a left-wing try from senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle drifted wide right of net.

After a pair of fouls and subsequent long free kicks in TCU offensive territory failed to result in any Horned Frog shots, Texas advanced right back down the pitch with sophomore defender Isabelle Kerr delivering a perfect cross from the right wing to the far post. Freshman forward Morgan Murphy leapt over her marker at 19:41 to head the ball, but her shot ventured wide left.

With UT having the run of play over the first 25-plus minutes, it proved to be a set piece that finally broke the dead-lock. On TCU's first corner of the match, forward Emma Heckendorn delivered a ball from the right corner into the middle. Midfielder Makenzie Koch leapt above the crowd and headed a threatening shot towards the lower left corner. Junior netminder Abby Smith dove quickly and got a touch, but the ball eluded her grasp, trickling just over the line at 28:19 for a 1-0 Horned Frog advantage.

Texas nearly had an equalizer at 38:09 as freshman forward Olivia Brook made a decisive move from the right wing into the middle and launched an ambitious shot from 27 yards. The drive looked as if it might have snuck under the crossbar had Arnold not managed to tip the ball over at the last second.

Straight out of the locker room break, TCU needed just 14 seconds to double its advantage. Off the second half kick-off, midfielder Michelle Prokof made a run up the middle and delivered a through ball into the 18 that found forward Emma Heckendorn racing in from the left side. She took one dribble and beat Smith to grant the Frogs a two-goal lead.

The advantage expanded to 3-0 at 53:18 as a feed from the left wing by midfielder Jill Finnerty was finished off via a header from TCU midfielder Eryn Spencer.

The Longhorn offense managed to pull one back at 57:29 as Shimmick started the play by launching a shot from the left side. The drive took a deflection off a TCU defender and appeared headed right towards a waiting Arnold in net. Campbell came racing out of nowhere right through the middle with inside position on her marker and finished off her third goal of the season with a right-footed chip from eight yards out.

The Texas offense continued to fight in the 63rd-minute as Shimmick again forced a save on a 22-yard shot from the left wing. Off a follow-up corner from the right side, UT senior defender Brooke Gilbert's header near the left post drifted just wide for a goal kick.

With the match fully open and the action quickly moving from end-to-end, the Horns continued to press their attack down the stretch. Lachappelle and junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer each had a long shot travel high of frame at 66:20 and 67:20, respectively.

Murphy blasted a shot from the left wing that was blocked out in front during the 82nd-minute, while Brook had a great chance from the middle of the 18 go awry at 82:40 as her left-footed try was mis-hit and rolled wide of the right post.

The last of the Burnt Orange & White's 27 total shots came off Campbell's foot at 88:13, but again drifted wide as TCU secured the two-goal victory.

Texas returns to action on Mon., Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. by hosting its final regular-season non-conference match of 2014 against Arkansas-Little Rock at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The contest is slated for live broadcast on Longhorn Network.
