10 Longhorns earn Academic All-Big 12 Cross Country

AUSTIN, Texas – The Big 12 Conference announced the 2014 Academic All-Big 12 Teams on Tuesday and a total of 10 Longhorns made the grade. Texas had four members on the men's team and six on the women's as well.
Senior Megan Siebert highlighted the Longhorns with her fourth appearance as a first team member. Marissa Pekarek, Alaina Perez and Connor Ward joined her on the women's first team with their second such academic honor. Sophomore Mary Beth Hamilton and redshirt freshman Katie Ruhala were each named to the second team to receive their first Academic All-Big 12 awards.
Will Nation and Brady Turnbull both received first team recognition for the second time in their careers while Craig Lutz joined them on the first team for his first Academic All-Big 12 Cross Country honor. Eduardo Rodriguez also earned his first academic all-conference award being named to the second team.
The Big 12 recognized 106 cross country student-athletes this year on the all-academic team with 91 of them receiving first team honors. First team members are student-athletes who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team honors those who hold GPA of 3.00 to 3.19.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or high either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except the percentage of participation are also eligible.
