Texas has 12 players on the first team
IRVING, Texas – The Big 12 Conference announced its 2014 Academic All-Big 12 Football team Thursday and Texas had 18 selections, including 12 on the first team.
Players earning first-team honors were DS Nate Boyer, P/PK Michael Davidson, C Dominic Espinosa, S Dylan Haines, LB Jordan Hicks, DB Devin Huffines, TE M.J. McFarland, OL Jake Raulerson, CB Ryan Roberts, WR Jaxon Shipley, WR Ty Templin and TE Chris Terry.
It marks the third-straight year Boyer has earned first-team honors. Huffines and McFarland were selected for a second-consecutive year.
The second team included RB Malcolm Brown, LB Demarco Cobbs, WR Chris Giron, WR Dakota Haines, QB Tyrone Swoopes and WR Jacorey Warrick.
Over the last nine years, Texas has led the conference in both total selections and first-team choices. During that span, the Longhorns have had 176 total honorees, including 116 on the first team. The next closest in both categories is Kansas with 147 total and 90 on the first team. Kansas State led this year with 29 overall selections, including 20 on the first team.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better grade-point average while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters, and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
