DOHA, Qatar – Texas All-America sophomore Madisyn Cox helped the U.S. to a fifth-place finish in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay Wednesday evening on day one of the FINA Short Course World Championships. The bi-annual event features racing contested in a 25-meter pool rather than the standard 50-meter pool utilized during most international events, including the Olympic Games.
Cox joined Shannon Vreeland, Emily Allen and Katie Drabot to place the Americans fourth in the preliminary round at 7 minutes, 44.81 seconds. The Lubbock native anchored the relay in 1:56.24. Cox did not compete on the relay in the finals, where the Americans ultimately placed fifth in 7:39.48. The Netherlands won the gold with a world record time of 7:32.85 while China won the silver in 7:37.02. Australia claimed the bronze in 7:38.59.
An All-American last season in the 200-yard individual medley, Cox earned her spot on the U.S. team in Doha by way of her 200m freestyle swim at last summer's USA Swimming National Championships. The 4x200m freestyle relay was Cox's lone event of the meet.
