The Track and Field team will split up this weekend with a group of sprinters, hurdlers and field event athletes from the top-ranked women and 13th-ranked men's squad competing in the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., and members of the distance unit heading to Ames, Iowa, for the Iowa State Classic.
These meets, both scheduled for Friday and Saturday, will serve as the final tuneup for the Big 12 Indoor Championships which will be held Feb. 28-March 1 in Ames.
While UT athletes such as thrower Ryan Crouser, pole vaulters Kaitlin Petrillose and Reese Watson, and sprinters/hurdlers Courtney Okolo, Morolake Akinosin and Morgan Snow, are ranked among the nation's elite and assured of traveling to the Big 12 meet, others are still vying for spots.
"After this weekend, we will set the Big 12 roster at 26 on both sides," head coach Mario Sategna said. "This is something we have talked about with the team throughout the season."
Along with gearing up for the Big 12 meet, the Longhorns are also trying to either post or improve upon national marks.
The top 12 relay units and best 16 marks in each individual event qualify for next month's NCAA Indoor Championships. There are eight events in which Longhorns are ranked among the top 10 in the country, including five with a top-five mark.
Crouser (shot put – 69-8/21.23m) and Petrillose (pole vault – 14-7.35/4.45m) lead the nation, Okolo is second in the 400 meters (52.51a – adjusted for altitude), Akinosun is fourth in the 60m (7.25a), and the 4x400-meter relay (3:33.24a) is No. 3.
Akinosun, Okolo, Petrillose and Snow are among 14 women heading to the Tyson Invitational which features athletes from 27 other schools, including nationally-ranked host Arkansas (No. 1 men; No. 6 Arkansas), Florida (No. 2 men; No. 4 women), LSU (No. 18 men; No. 10 women), Kansas (No. 11 – women), Florida State (No. 6 men) and Wisconsin (No. 5 men). Watson headlines a group of four pole vaulters and 24 men making the trip to Arkansas.
"This is traditionally a really strong qualifying meet," Sategna said of the Tyson Invitational.
A smaller grouper of Longhorns (12 men and 10 women) will travel to the Iowa State Classic which has athletes from seven ranked teams set to compete. Seniors Sara Sutherland and Marielle Hall will look to improve their 3,000-meter times. Sutherland currently ranks No. 8 nationally (9:10.54) and Hall, an All-American in cross country last fall, is No. 41 (9:28.54).
"The distance group will be at Iowa State," Sategna said. "We'll be looking for two things, especially since they are limited in the distance competitions during the indoor season. We want to see Marielle, Sara, and Olivia (Mickle) improve on national qualifying performances while at the same time giving everyone else who is going up there the opportunity to be on the conference track where we will return in two weeks. "
Action at the Tyson Invitational begins at 11 a.m. Central Friday, followed by a noon start on Saturday.
The Iowa State Classic starts at 11 a.m. Central Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.
