No. 7 Northwestern defeats No. 17 Women's Tennis, 5-2

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas senior Elizabeth Begley and sophomore Breaunna Addison posted impressive straight-sets wins, but No. 17 Texas (3-5) fell to No. 7 Northwestern (5-2) by a 5-2 count Saturday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Northwestern opened the match by sweeping the three doubles matches to win the doubles point. The Wildcats' 25th-ranked tandem of Alicia Barnett and Veronica Corning led off with an 8-6 win over UT's Addison and Neda Koprcina at first doubles.
At No. 2, UT's Begley and Pippa Horn trailed NU's Nida Hamilton and Maddie LIpp by a 6-3 count before rallying to even the match at seven and force a tiebreaker. Northwestern won the tiebreaker by an 8-6 count and secured the doubles point before closing out the match at third doubles.
The Wildcats pushed their lead to 3-0 behind victories at the fourth and sixth singles positions before UT's Addison notched a 6-3, 6-2 win over NU's 30th-ranked Corning at first singles to trim the Wildcats' cushion to 3-1. Texas' Begley gutted out a 7-6 (6), 7-5 win over Northwestern's Barnett at third singles, but the Wildcats clinched the team victory when NU's Lok Sze Leung defeated UT's Lina Padegimaite at fifth singles, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Texas' Ratnika Batra dropped the first set to Northwestern's Belinda Niu at second singles. Batra broke Niu to force a second-set tiebreaker, but Niu claimed the tiebreaker, 7-2 to end the match and preserve a 5-2 Northwestern win.
Texas wraps its weekend home stand on Sunday when it hosts No. 15 Vanderbilt at noon.
