Breaunna Addison, Elizabeth Begley and Lana Groenvynck win singles matches in a dual match spanning well over four hours.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 15 Vanderbilt (5-3) edged No. 17 Texas (3-6) by a 4-3 count Sunday in a contest spanning over four-and-a-half hours at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Vanderbilt opened the match by winning two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. The Commodores' Marie Casares and Courtney Colton led off with an 8-3 win at second doubles over UT's Elizabeth Begley and Pippa Horn.
At third doubles, Vandy's Georgina Sellyn and Frances Altic broke the serve of UT's Ratnika Batra and Lina Padegimaite for an 8-7 lead and held serve in the following game to win the match and clinch the doubles point. At first doubles, UT's Breaunna Addison and Neda Koprcina trailed Vandy's Ashleigh Antal and Lauren Mira 7-5 before holding serve and breaking Vandy to even the match at seven. The match progressed to a tiebreaker where Addison and Koprcina prevailed, 7-5.
UT's Addison evened the match at one with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Vanderbilt's 48th-ranked Sellyn at first singles. Texas assumed a 2-1 lead behind Lana Groenvynck's 6-0, 6-4 win over Vandy's Antal at sixth singles. The Longhorns pushed their lead to 3-1 when Begley finished off a 6-2, 6-0 win over Vanderbilt's Mira at second singles.
Vanderbilt sliced the Texas lead to 3-2 by way of Colton's 6-0, 6-3 win over UT's Padegimaite at fourth singles. The Commodores evened the match at third singles, where Altick topped UT's Koprcina, 6-1, 7-5. Koprcina evened the second set at five after trailing 5-2, but Altick held serve and broke Koprcina to close out her win.
At fifth singles, Vandy's Casares took the first set from UT's Horn, 7-5. Horn trailed 2-0 in the second set before claiming the next five games for a 5-2 lead. Horn held serve once more and closed out the second set, 6-3.
Casares opened the third set by holding serve, breaking Horn's serve and holding serve again for a 3-0 lead. Horn and Casares held serve until the decisive eighth game when Casares broke Horn's serve to take the set, 6-2 and preserve the 4-3 win for Vanderbilt.
Texas resumes dual-match play on Friday, Feb. 28 when it hosts Houston.
