AUSTIN, Texas - Texas Men's Tennis defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-1, on Sunday evening at Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The Longhorns (11-2) won both matches during Sunday's doubleheader after defeating UT Arlington in the afternoon, 6-1.
"I was really proud of some of our endurance today with the doubleheader," head coach Michael Center said. "It was a long day and we asked a few guys to play four matches, so it was a good opportunity for them to show what they can do."
The Longhorns swiftly earned the doubles point by holding serve in every doubles game and winning, 8-2, at position Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.
Senior All-American David Holiner's straight-set win over Javier Pujol (6-2, 6-0) at No. 4 singles was the first singles match completed, followed by another straight-set victory from junior Clement Homs to give UT a 3-0 lead.
Junior Jacoby Lewis played in both matches of the doubleheader and completed the day with a 4-0 combined record in singles and doubles. Against the Islanders, Lewis picked up an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles with David Holiner and defeated Paul Cook at No. 6 singles in straight sets (7-5, 6-0). Lewis' win over Cook put Texas up 4-0 in the dual match to clinch the win.
Playing at the No. 1 position for the second time in his career, sophomore Nick Naumann defeated Peter Nagy in three sets (6-2, 4-6,1-0[8]). The third set was a 10-point tiebreaker after the match had been clinched by Texas. Naumann improves to 16-6 overall and 10-2 in dual match play.
The Longhorns improve their all-time series lead over Corpus Christi, 12-0. This season, UT is 5-0 at home and 4-0 against ITA Texas region opponents this season.
Next up, Texas has a non-conference road match at TCU on Saturday, March 1.
