CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Texas Men's Tennis' five-match winning steak ended with a 4-3 loss against No. 11 North Carolina at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Monday.
The Longhorns (13-3) won the doubles point, but for the first time this season lost four of the six singles matches to succumb to the Tar Heels' comeback.
“We didn't take advantage of the momentum we created after doubles,” head coach Michael Center said. “We gave up five first sets in singles -- they took it to us. We fought back and were able to stay in the match, but we just can't have a lapse like that against a good team. North Carolina is as good as any team we've played this year.”
In doubles action, Adrien Berkowicz and George Goldhoff defeated UNC's Brett Clark and Esben Hess-Olesen (Søren Hess-Olesen's twin brother), 8-2 at the No. 3 position. Berkowicz and Goldhoff are 2-1 as doubles partners this season.
Eighth-ranked Lloyd Glasspool and Hess-Olesen defeated UNC's Nelson Vick and Oystein Steiro in a tiebreaker to clinch the doubles point for Texas. Glasspool and Hess-Olesen improve to 18-8 overall this season.
In singles, Texas fell behind quickly by losing five of the six first sets.
Aix-en-Provence, France natives Adrien Berkowicz and Clement Homs recovered from first-set losses to earn points for the Longhorns at the Nos. 4 and 6 positions, respectively. Berkowicz notched his team-high 21st singles win and improved to 11-2 in dual match play. Homs improved to 6-0 in dual match play, including a 4-0 mark at the No. 6 position.
UNC's No. 19 Brayden Schnur edged No. 31 Hess-Olesen in three sets at No. 1 singles to clinch the team win for the Tar Heels.
Monday marked the fourth consecutive season North Carolina (12-2) and Texas have met. The teams have split the last four meetings, 2-2. Texas leads the all-time series, 13-4.
Texas faces its third consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent on Thursday against Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.
