AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas won 10 races on day one of the Longhorn Invitational Saturday on Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin. Eight schools competed in the annual event that features head-to-head races at a distance of two kilometers, the same distance contested at the NCAA Championships.
The Longhorns won three of five races against Tulsa in the morning session but were edged by two-tenths of a second in the first varsity eight. Based on the point-scoring format of the event, the Longhorns fell to Tulsa by a 106-104 count, a result that set up an afternoon meeting for Texas against Canisius.
Texas swept all three races from Canisius in the afternoon session. The Longhorns won all three events by 23 seconds or more. The Horns also participated in four exhibition heats, winning them all.
The final session of the Longhorn Invitational gets underway Sunday at 8 a.m. CT. Texas will take on Big 12 foe Oklahoma. Spectators can view races from the Roberta Crenshaw Footbridge beneath the Mopac Expressway on the banks of Lady Bird Lake.
