The 2014 Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays got underway Wednesday with the heptathlon and decathlon.
Defending NCAA champion Johannes Hock currently sits in second after the first day of the decathlon at the 87th annual, four-day track and field meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Hock scored 3,947 points, impressive considering he is competing in his first multi-event of the year due to an elbow injury.
Freshman Robert Cardina of Penn State is first with 4,069, aided by 934 points in the high jump when he cleared 7 feet, 1/4 inch (2.14m). Solomon Ijah of Eastern Michigan is third with 3892 and defending champion Curtis Beach of Duke is sixth with 3,821 as third through seventh places are separated by just 74 points.
Hock had the best shot put of the day, posting a mark of 49 5 3/4 (15.08m), and put up a decathlon career-best 10.67 seconds, though wind-aided, in the 100 meters, the first event of the day.
"The wind was pretty much the same as last year's nationals, but my time was even faster," Hock said. "It was a great start."
Teammate Chris Irvin collected 3,652 points and is in 12th place in the first decathlon of his career. Irvin, who is a redshirt freshman, finished second in the opening event to garner 959 points, posting a time of 10.57. He had the best mark in the 400 meter, the last event of the day, clocking a time of 48.65 to earn 878 points.
Coming off Tommy John surgery last summer, Hock is not expected to produce the results he had last year when he won the Big 12 decathlon in a meet-record 8,293 and went on to capture just the second NCAA title by a freshman with a total of 8,267.
One of his stronger events, Hock is likely to lose points in the javelin, one of five events to be contested Thursday. The right-handed sophomore will be forced to toss left-handed since he is not cleared medically yet to use the right arm in that event.
Hock competed during the indoor season, but only in individual events. He is hoping to post a total, which will advance him to June's NCAA meet. The top 24 marks in the decathlon advance to nationals.
"I had some indoor competitions but for us, multi-events it is never really the same as competing in a full multi," Hock said about how he felt after the first five events. "I did not really know where I was. It was a great start though I had to pay a bit for the lack of training because of the surgery in the other events. I am still up and running and it is looking good for outdoor nationals."
Another Penn State athlete leads the heptathlon. Senior Brittney Howell has 3,442, just barely ahead of Alex Gochenour of Arkansas who is second with 3,431. Howell (13.61w) and Gochenour (13.62w) finished first and second, respectively, in the 100-meter hurdles, the opening event of the day.
Thursday's action gets underway at 10 a.m. Central with the 110-meter hurdles, the first decathlon event of the day. Field events begin at 12:30 p.m. and running events at 4:30 p.m.
Admission to Myers Stadium is free on Thursday.
