After combining for 16 victories at Saturday's Michael Johnson Dr Pepper Classic, the third-ranked women and No. 15 men's Track and Field team will head to this week's prestigious Penn Relays.
The meet, held at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, began Tuesday with multi-events, but kicks into high gear on Thursday. The Longhorns are sending a contingent of 15 men and 15 women, mostly sprinters and distance runners, to the 104th edition of the event.
"We are excited to be back," head coach Mario Sategna said of UT's first trip since 2012. "We ran into a conflict last year with the conference meet. There is a long history of Texas attending Penn Relays. For us, this is a meet that helps put the final touches on getting ready for the championship portion of our season."
The Longhorns are entered in a number of relays including the men's and women's 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays.
The women have the top mark in the nation in five events including the 4x400m relay. The foursome of Briana Nelson, Courtney Okolo, Kendall Baisden and Ashley Spencer clocked a time of 3:26.38 at last month's Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
Okolo posted the No. 1 time (51.36) in the nation in the 400 meters at the Texas Invitational (April 12). Morolake Akinosun has the top time in the 100m (11.10w). However, the Horns are not entered in the open sprint events at the Penn Relays.
Danielle Dowie gets the meet started for the Longhorns on Thursday. The senior ranks No. 9 on the 2014 NCAA performers list in the 400-meter hurdles (57.52) and is entered in that event which is set for 8 a.m. Central.
Marielle Hall, a native of nearby Haddonfield, N.J., remains in the lead nationally in the 5,000 meters (school record 15:19.26 at the Stanford Invitational, April 4) and is scheduled to run the anchor leg during Thursday's (4:20 p.m.) distance medley relay. She will also compete in Saturday's (2 p.m.) Olympic Development mile.
After this weekend, the Longhorns have just one meet before the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, which will be held May 16-18 in Lubbock, Texas. UT will serve as host to the Longhorn Invitational on Saturday, May 3.
Longhorn Notes
Texas in the National Team Rankings: The Longhorns remained No. 3 on the women's side and moved from up one spot to 15th on the men's in this week's USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings. Field Set for Longhorn Invitational: Texas will play host to its third and final home of the season on Saturday, May 3 with the Longhorn Invitational at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The team-scored meet will feature men's and women's competitors from Akron, Baylor, Cal St. Northridge, Colorado, North Texas, Sam Houston State, Stanford, TCU Utah and Virginia Tech. Field events begin at 12:30 p.m. and running events start at 4:45 p.m. Click here for the schedule. Admission is free.
