Longhorns improve to 4-1 in league play, close weekend road swing Sunday at Kansas.
MANHATTAN, Kan. – No. 25 Texas (9-9, 4-1 Big 12) won two of three doubles matches and swept the six singles matches on its way to a 7-0 victory over Kansas State (8-9, 2-3 Big 12) Saturday afternoon at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
Texas clinched the doubles point behind victories at the second and third doubles positions. Freshmen Ratnika Batra and Neda Koprcina opened with a convincing 8-1 win over the Wildcats' Palma Juhasz and Iva Bago at the second slot. K-State responded with a win at first doubles, but UT freshman Pippa Horn and senior Juliana Gajic sealed the doubles point for the Horns with their 8-6 win over Livia Cirnu and Maria Panaite at third doubles.
Texas dominated the singles session and won all 12 sets played to close out its 7-0 win. UT's 112th-ranked Elizabeth Begley made short work of K-State's Juhasz and won by a 6-0, 6-1 count at second singles. Texas' 86th-ranked Batra pushed the Longhorns' lead to 3-0 behind her 6-2, 6-0 win over Panaite at third singles.
UT's 18th-ranked Addison, an ITA singles All-American a year ago, clinched the Texas win with her 6-3, 6-2 win over former Big 12 Player of the Year Petra Niedermayerova at first singles.
The bottom half of the Texas singles lineup preserved the shutout and delivered straight-sets singles wins. The Longhorns' lead ballooned to 5-0 by way of freshman Lana Groenvynck's 6-4, 6-1 win over Bago at sixth singles. UT's Koprcina delivered a 6-4, 6-3 win over St. Hill at fourth singles, and Texas' Horn closed out the 7-0 win with her 6-4, 6-4 win over Cirnu at fifth singles.
Texas closes out its weekend road swing on Sunday at Kansas. First serve is set for noon CT at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
