Tiarra Davis throws 19th complete game of the season; Devon Tunning leads offense with a two-hit night
AUSTIN, Texas – Freshman Tiarra Davis pitched a complete-game shutout in Texas Softball's 2-0 win over the Kansas Jayhawks on Friday night at Red & Charline McCombs Field. Texas takes game one of the three-game set and improves to 31-19 on the 2014 season and 10-4 in Big 12 Conference play, while Kansas falls to 29-20 and 3-10. The win marks the 14th straight win for Texas over the Jayhawks.
Davis struck out four and allowed two hits en route to her fourth complete-game shutout and 19th complete game of the season. The win runs the Texas southpaw's record to 16-10 and 8-3 in conference.
The Texas offense mustered six hits in the contest and scratched out one run in the first and third innings apiece. Freshman Devon Tunning led the offense by going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Taylor Thom added a hit and later scored the game-winning run on Tunning's double in the first inning before knocking in senior Brejae Washington with a sacrifice fly to center field in the third inning.
Prior to the contest, Thom and Washington were honored as the newest record holders at the University of Texas. On March 19 against Houston, Thom knocked in her 156th career RBI before Washington took over as the school's all-time hits leader last Sunday against Oklahoma State with her 246th career base knock.
As for Friday night's contest, Washington pushed out a bunt single in the third inning and then swiped second base on the ensuing pitch for her 129th career stolen base, another Texas record Washington holds. The San Bernardino native advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Lindsey Stephens and scored on Thom's sacrifice flyout.
Davis ran into her only trouble of the evening in the fifth inning. Kansas got runners on base courtesy of a hit by Chanin Naudin, a walk issued to Taylor Dodson, and a throwing error on a ball hit by Taylor McElhaney to load the bases with two outs. Davis maintained her composure and was able to induce a ground out to third base to end the threat.
The weekend series against Kansas continues with a Saturday afternoon matinee at 3 p.m. CT at Red & Charline McCombs Field. The game will be televised nationally on Longhorn Network.
