HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Former Texas Women's Basketball All-American Stacy Stephens has been named assistant coach at Sam Houston State University, the school announced on Thursday. During the last two years, Stephens has served as a special assistant on Karen Aston's staff at UT.
"I am so thrilled for Stacy's opportunity at Sam Houston State," Aston said. "She has done such a terrific job here at Texas by improving our communication lines with high school coaches, Exes and fans. I am so appreciative of her loyalty to Texas Basketball. Her passion for basketball and helping develop young women will be immediately felt by the Bearkat Women's Basketball program. We wish Stacy the best of luck and as always, she is a Longhorn for Life!"
The former All-American enters her first NCAA Division I coaching job after rejoining the Texas Women's Basketball family as special assistant for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. In her former capacity, Stephens coordinated various day-to-day operations of the program, assisted with year-round recruiting efforts, oversaw alumni relations and various summer camp duties.
As a student-athlete at Texas, Stephens (2000-04) was an Associated Press and U.S. Basketball Writers Association All-American, and a finalist for the Wade Trophy and Naismith Award during her junior and senior seasons. She also claimed All-Big 12 First Team honors in 2003 and 2004.
Stephens guided the Longhorns to the 2003 NCAA Final Four, two Big 12 regular-season titles and one Big 12 tournament title. She became the third Longhorn to collect 1,000-plus points and 1,000-plus rebounds by averaging 12.7 points and 9.1 rebounds as a four-year starter. Stephens currently holds the program record for career offensive rebounds (482), ranks second in career total rebounds (1,223) and is tied for 10th in career points (1,708).
The Houston Comets selected Stephens in the third round of the 2004 WNBA Draft. She spent four years playing professionally in both the United States and overseas.
In 2007, Stephens began her coaching career as an assistant at Fort Worth Christian High School and later joined the collegiate coaching ranks as an assistant at Cisco College for the 2009-10 season. After one year in Cisco, Stephens served as an assistant women's basketball coach at Texas College for two seasons and was also a Student Activities Coordinator for the Texas College student body during the 2011-12 academic year.
