AMES, Iowa -- No. 3/3 Texas Women's Basketball lost its first game of the season to Iowa State on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum, 59-57.
The Longhorns (13-1, 2-1) were led by 16 points from junior guard Brady Sanders and 15 points off the bench from sophomore forward Nekia Jones. Despite the loss, UT is off to its third-best start in program history.
Texas made its way to a 37-24 first-half lead by draining seven 3-pointers, including three each from Jones and Sanders. Entering Saturday's game, UT averaged 3.2 treys per game. The Horns shot 46 percent in the first half while holding Iowa State to a 26 percent clip.
After the break, the tables turned as Iowa State (11-3, 2-1) out-scored 35-20 in the second half with a 52 percent shooting performance, while Texas' shooting accuracy dropped to 21 percent.
Senior forward Nneka Enemkpali tied the game, 57-57, at the free throw line with 42 seconds remaining in regulation. Iowa State's Seanna Johnson responded with a layup on the other end of the floor to give the Cyclones a 59-57 go-ahead lead.
Enemkpali finished with eight points and 10 rebounds -- just shy of her eighth consecutive double-double.
Texas out-rebounded Iowa State, 49-to-36. The Longhorns have out-rebounded its opponent in all 14 games this season.
The Longhorns return to the hardwood to face Oklahoma on Wednesday in Norman, Oklahoma.
