Longhorns win 12 of 16 events and open the new year with convincing road win over the Tigers.
AUBURN, Ala. – No. 6 Texas (6-1) claimed 12 of 16 events and notched a decisive 176-124 win over host No. 12 Auburn Thursday afternoon at the Tigers' James. E. Martin Aquatics Center. The Longhorns posted their second consecutive win over the Tigers and picked up their first win at Auburn's home pool in six years (Jan. 8, 2009).
Auburn won the meet's opening event, the 200-yard medley relay, but Texas claimed the next five events to seize a lead it would not relinquish. Senior Kaitlin Pawlowicz posted the first of two wins on the day in the 1,000 freestyle with a top time of 9 minutes, 47.63 seconds. Sophomore Madisyn Cox notched her first win of the day in the 200 freestyle and cruised to victory in 1:48.00. It marked Cox's first collegiate swim since November after competing at the FINA Short Course World Championships last month in Qatar.
Sophomore Tasija Karosas led a one-two Texas finish in the 100 backstroke and took the win in 54.28. Senior Sarah Denninghoff took the second spot in 55.05. Senior Gretchen Jaques added a win in the 100 breaststroke at 1:00.67. Jaques is one of only two Longhorns ever to clear 59 seconds in the event and currently ranks second nationally.
Versatile senior Kelsey LeNeave notched her first win of the day in the 200 butterfly at 1:58.66 and completed the butterfly sweep with her time of 53.91 later on in the 100 butterfly. All-America senior Emma Ivory-Ganja opened the meet by winning the three-meter diving event with 326.40 points. She capped the diving competition with a top total of 295.43 points on the one-meter board. All-America sophomore Murphy Bromberg placed second on the one-meter board with 289.43 points while junior Meghan Houston placed third on one-meter with 288.45 points.
Karosas returned to claim her second victory on the day with her 1:56.29 in the 200 backstroke. Denninghoff followed in second at 1:58.96 while sophomore Rebecca Baxley placed third at 2:02.42. Jaques completed a sweep of the breaststroke events with her winning mark of 2:13.64 in the 200 breaststroke. Pawlowicz produced her second win of the day and led a one-two Longhorns showing atop the 500 freestyle. The Virginia native took the win in 4:49.21 while Cox placed second at 4:52.44.
Cox notched the Horns' final win of the day and claimed the 200 IM in 2:00.54. Senior Skylar Smith took second in 2:03.74.
Texas wraps its road swing Saturday morning with a visit to No. 2 Georgia. The meet is set for an 11 a.m. ET start (10 a.m. CT) at UGA's Gabrielsen Natatorium.
