Senior Molly McCage weighs in on fan questions from around the world.
Texas Volleyball fans from around the world tweeted in questions and asked for advice from senior middle blocker Molly McCage with the hashtag, #MondaysWithMolly.
Here is what she had to say:
What did your parents do—or not do—that helped you stay motivated?
Molly: My dad has always been about making sure I was having fun in whatever I was doing. In reality, losing sucks and winning is great, but actually enjoying playing is what matters most, because the game isn't life or death. My mom has always been very supportive. I remember going to club practice and I was so bad I didn't want to go. My parents forced me to go, because they knew I had potential.
What has been the highlight of your senior year so far?
Molly: Probably Chloe's kill from the Kansas state game. That's what stands out most right now!
Knowing what you now know of volleyball, is there a skill that you wished you had really focused on when you first started playing?
Molly: Blocking. I remember just putting my hands up and getting a block, because I was so tall. But there's actually a lot more to it. I learned so much from my club coaches and Erik (Sullivan) especially.
What is your favorite flavor of skittles (from teammate Mirta Baselovic)?
Molly: I don't even like skittles that much. What's your favorite flavor, Mirta?
What are some tips for jump serves?
Molly: It's all about toss and rhythm!
What do you order at Starbucks?
Molly: I order a lot of things. Lately I've been ordering a matcha iced green tea latte with coconut milk. I've gotten Micaya (White) to start ordering them too. Since the weather has been a little colder, I've ordered a skinny peppermint mocha.
How do players decide to tape their fingers? Is it strategic how it's placed? What does the tape do?
Molly: In my case, I'm trying not to break my fingers, which happens a lot. I like to buddy tape my fingers (two together), so it minimizes the pain when I block. I tape my fingers on my knuckles. It just serves protection when you're blocking.
Thank you everyone for your questions! I will be back next week with more #MondaysWithMolly so tweet @TexasVolleyball if you are seeking advice or have a question.
