PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas – Eric Davis, Jr. scored a team-high 19 points, but it was not enough as the Texas Longhorns fell, 84-73, to the Texas A&M Aggies in the quarterfinal round of the Battle 4 Atlantis at Atlantis' Imperial Arena on Wednesday night.
Davis shot 60-percent (6-of-10) from the field and knocked down four 3-pointers to lead the Longhorns (1-2). Cameron Ridley reached double figures for the third time this season with 14 points and five rebounds, and Isaiah Taylor contributed 10 points and a team-high five assists.
Danuel House was the top scorer for the Aggies, adding 19 points and a game-high seven rebounds. A&M shot 49-percent from the floor (24-of-49) and converted 76-percent (28-of-37) of their attempts from the free-throw line.
Texas experienced foul trouble early as the Aggies entered the bonus just 3:57 into the first half. The Aggies converted 88-percent of their attempts from the free-throw line (15-of-17) in the opening 20 minutes. Davis provided the spark for the Longhorns in the first half with 13 points, knocking down his first four 3-point attempts and finishing the half connecting on 4-of-6 from three-point range. The Aggies entered the break with a 49-41 lead.
The Longhorns opened the second half in a similar fashion, sending the Aggies back into the bonus just 3:22 into the half. Texas was able to claw its way back to within two (55-53) with 15:36 left in the half, but Texas A&M answered with a 9-0 run over the next 1:24 to extend its lead to 64-53.
Refusing to quit, the Longhorns stormed back with a run of their own, outscoring the Aggies 9-0 over the next 1:48 to bring the score to 64-62 with 11:41 remaining.
A total of 56 fouls were called in the game, with Texas committing 29 fouls to Texas A&M's 23. The Longhorns had eight players with at least three fouls, but Ridley was the only player to foul out.
Texas went 45.8-percent from the field (22-of-48), while shooting 35-percent from behind the arc (7-of-20). The Longhorns were sent to the free-throw line often throughout the game, but were only able to convert 60-percent of their attempts (22-of-37).
With the loss, the Longhorns will face the Washington Huskies for the second time this season on Thursday evening in the consolation round of the Battle 4 Atlantis. Washington won the first meeting 77-71 in Shanghai on Nov. 13. Tip is set for 6 p.m. Central at Atlantis, and the game will be televised nationally by AXS TV.
