Texas Quotes
Head Coach Rick Barnes
On the game tonight: Great effort balance-wise with our guys tonight. Javan (Felix) came back and the balance is something we've been wanting to try and get to all year. We were hoping if Jon (Holmes) and Javan could get back, we would eventually get to a rotation where we could get some consistency. Defensively we were good. Offensively the last couple of games, we've done a much better job of making our possessions count.
On celebrating 600th win: I'm not just saying this, but winning the game tonight was more important than that, because I still have a lot of faith and confidence in this group of guys and they deserve it. We've had 17 bad days, but again in sports you don' t always get rewarded the way you want to. It happens to everybody. Obviously, I've been fortunate and blessed. I became a head coach at a very young age and I've worked for great institutions. I remember when I got into it, there were all these stories about athletic directors, but I've never worked for anything but a great athletic director. I've had great support, players and coaching staff. I've never not had a good coaching staff. I've been able to have terrific assistant coaches, and Todd Wright's been with me for the last 21 years. What I think about is how many people I've watched grow up. That really is the best part of it. I've spent the majority of my time here at Texas and I've been blessed. I wouldn't change any of it. I would like to win a lot more than we've won, but one thing we've always done is try and play a hard schedule to get ready. I truly love what I do, but the best part really has always been the relationships and the interaction every day with people you enjoy being with.
On Javan Felix injury: We're concerned and will be because with the way the game is, you never know. But we are concerned about it. The way The University of Texas does it, we have a protocol and we're not going to turn him loose. Jonathan Holmes begged to go to Manhattan, but the doctor just didn't feel like the numbers were there.
On Javan looking like himself: This time of year, you don't practice a lot. Javan had only two days. The first day you could tell that he was floating around on egg shells, and we let him go at his own pace. We did the same tonight. We knew we were going to try and limit his minutes in terms of how long at a time. The thing about it is, it has been three times. He won't do much tomorrow, but he'll get reevaluated and we'll go from there.
Junior Guard Javan Felix
On being worried about concussions: I mean, yeah, of course. It's my brain. The only way to stop this is to not play and I love basketball. I've been playing my whole life. I healed up and I was ready to go, so I am going to play as long as I can.
On what Coach Barnes has done for him: When you get recruited out of high school, you already think that you're good. He did a really good job of showing us that there's a lot more that we have to learn to be successful in this game and successful in college basketball. Playing in the Big 12 is tough every night. He forces the details on you and makes sure you are taking care of all the right things. He teaches how to grow up and be men, how to have tough conversations with people and teammates, everyone. He is a great guy. He helps us grow both on the court and off the court.
Junior Center Cameron Ridley
On his performance tonight: The guards just looked for me throughout the game. I tried to play as hard as I could on the glass, and obviously it worked out well. I give all the credit to the guards for getting the ball to me in tight spots to where I can easily score.
On Coach Rick Barnes: I would say the biggest thing he emphasizes to all his players is about self-discipline. He treats us like we are men. He talks to us about more than basketball. He talks to us about life. He is a very positive man, and he gives us confidence in ourselves. He's a great coach and great person.
Sophomore Guard Kendal Yancy
On what helped his performance tonight: Confidence. I was confident out there. I have been talking to Javan recently just on confidence with shooting and just being able to be yourself out there and not being able to think so much.
On Coach Barnes' impact on him: He expects excellence out of everybody. He teaches us how to be self-disciplined and being thankful for being at this University. He reminds us every once in a while that we are blessed to be here, so we shouldn't take this for granted. Every minute we step on the court, we should play as hard as we can. I learned a lot from him and really just getting a relationship and getting to know Rick Barnes. It's an honor to play for him.
TCU Quotes
Head Coach Trent Johnson
Opening statement: That looked like a rerun. I've seen that picture before. Obviously, their length caused some problems for us. We had a lot of open shots, I thought, in the middle in the first half. I thought in the second half, before they made the run, that our guys got real tentative. We inverted Trey (Ziegler), took him off the perimeter and put him on the high post, so he could flash and get some opportunities to draw and kick and make some ill-advised decisions, wrong decisions. Against a team like this, the way we're shooting the ball or not shooting the ball, that's a problem--a real problem. Fifteen out of 52 and five out of 16 from the three, eight out of 16 from the free throw line, I've seen that before. Texas is a good team like a lot of teams in this league.
On difficulty keeping the team's confidence without results: Is it hard to keep the team believing without results? We had a good week of practice, I base it off of that. I think the reality of this is, when you say is it hard to keep your team confident, they understand why we're getting beat. We're not playing very well. We're not rebounding the ball well. We're not shooting the ball very well. In terms of me getting them to believe without getting results, the reality is I'm not a big false confidence guy. If you shoot the ball well, you have a chance to be successful. If you rebound the ball well, you have a chance to be successful. If you take care of the ball well, you have a chance to be successful. Obviously we haven't done any of that, so we haven't been successful. I'm not really worried about keeping them confident. That responsibility goes back on them a little bit. We will practice tomorrow at 3:45, and we'll get ready for a very good Oklahoma State team that's playing pretty well right now.
On what the Texas defense did well: Their length causes you problems. Their length and strength puts you in situations where you become tentative. When you are open, it's like, 'oh my goodness.' Good players, good teams have a way of finding Kyan. Kyan Anderson, he knocks it down. Chauncey Collins is a good example. He doesn't play a lot, but he was open. He shot the ball with confidence. Without looking at the tape, I thought we attacked it pretty well. When we're shooting air balls from the side and shooting uncontested jump shots from the middle line and we're not making them and then you make them in practice, that speaks volumes to the competition level and not being aggressive and not shooting the ball with confidence. We had a guy step on the baseline and made three, missed one. It happens. That's the difference between being good and being average. That's the bottom line, and we're not very good right now.
Senior Guard Kyan Anderson
On his defensive effort: I tried to come out today and give us extra opportunities to score the basketball. I know right now we're struggling to score the basketball, so I'm just trying to give us more possessions.
On toughness scoring inside against Texas: Most definitely, it's Texas. They're huge in the paint. I always tell the guys that if they're going to go down there to make sure they have a plan. Yeah, it's definitely tough.
On whether Coach Johnson is keeping confidence: Oh yes, most definitely. It's a tough league. We're trying to find our edge to get us over this hump right now. We know every night we're going to have to bring a lot of intensity and play the best basketball we can play.
