CHICAGO, Ill. -- Ninth-ranked Texas Men's Tennis defeated No. 13 Columbia, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon in the consolation round of the ITA National Indoor Championship. The Longhorns conclude play in the National Indoors and return to Austin with two victories against top-25 opponents.
"With so many good teams in one spot at this event, you get a good idea of what your strengths and weakness are," Head Coach Michael Center said. "It's early in the season, but I'm pleased with the progress we are making."
Texas (9-1) started strong in doubles as senior All-Americans Lloyd Glasspool and Søren Hess-Olesen teamed up for a 6-2 win over Columbia's 12th-ranked doubles team, Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur. Glasspool and Hess-Olesen improve to 5-2 during dual match play and 8-2 in their last 10 doubles matches.
Columbia (3-2) responded with wins at second and third doubles to take the doubles point.
The Longhorns took control of the match in singles by winning 5-of-6 first sets and earning points at position Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 5. Sophomore George Goldhoff clinched the match at No. 5 singles with a three-set win over Columbia's Bert Vancura, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
Once again, UT's stalwart singles front line of Hess-Olesen, Glasspool and senior Adrien Berkowicz proved to a vital part of success. The first three lines of singles play are a combined 27-2 this season, including a 20-0 mark at lines one and two.
"Our top three guys had a great tournament. They are all competing very well and not losing their poise during momentum swings," Center said. "When you have a group of student-athletes who consistently compete with confidence and poise, it is a great base for success."
Glasspool improved to 6-0 at No. 2 singles this season with his second win over a ranked opponent this weekend, quickly defeating No. 76 Dragos Ignat, 6-0, 6-4.
Hess-Olesen and Berkowicz both improved to 10-0 during dual match play with wins at lines one and three, respectively. Hess-Olesen defeated 13th-ranked Winston Lin, 6-2, 6-1. Berkowicz prevailed against Max Schnur, 6-2, 6-3.
Texas returns to Austin for a seven-match homestand that includes four top-25 teams, starting with No. 7 North Carolina on Friday, Feb. 20 (6 p.m. Central, Weller Indoor Tennis Center).
