AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior All-American Lloyd Glasspool rallied to clinch a 4-3 win for No. 10 Texas Men's Tennis over eighth-ranked North Carolina on Friday night at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center.
Texas (10-1) got off to a strong start, winning the first three points, but the Tar Heels (9-4) would rally back to tie it at 3-all. In the deciding singles match, Glasspool rallied from a 5-1 third-set deficit against No. 19 Ronnie Schneider to clinch the team win after prevailing in a tiebreaker, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(6). Glasspool is now 12-5 this season, including a 7-0 mark at No. 2 singles.
"Lloyd has been working really hard on his mental game," Head Coach Michael Center said. "I noticed when he was down 5-1, he didn't go away; he was still playing with a lot of determination. I felt like 'I don't know if he can win, but he's going to give himself a chance,' and that's all you can do in that moment. He kept giving himself a chance and kept competing. He stayed in that moment and he did it. I'm really proud of him."
Winning the doubles point came from the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Senior All-American Søren Hess-Olesen and Glasspool improved to 10-4 on the season as partners with a 6-4 win, and Adrien Berkowicz and George Goldhoff collected their team-best 11th win on the year by winning 6-3.
Junior Nick Naumann clinched the first singles point with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Oystein Steiro at No. 5 singles.
16th-ranked Hess-Olesen extended his singles winning streak to 13 with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over 6th-ranked Brayden Schnur at No. 1 singles. Hess-Olesen improved to 21-2 on the year, including an 11-1 record against ranked opponents.
North Carolina would win the next three points with wins at position Nos. 3, 4, and 5. 65th-ranked senior Adrien Berkowicz was defeated, 3-6, 5-7, and dropped his first match of the dual match season after winning 10-straight. 104th-ranked Jack Murray of North Carolina defeated George Goldhoff, 7-5, 6-3, and 75th-ranked Robert Kelly edged Adrian Ortiz-Ruiz, 1-6, 7-5, 6-1.
"I don't think it could have been any closer tonight," Center concluded. "It was just a battle all night. It looked like we had some chances to put the match away early, but North Carolina has great competitors. I'm just proud of our guys, proud of Lloyd for hanging in there. It was a great win for us over an unbelievable team."
Texas continues its seven-match homestand against No. 19 Wake Forest on Sunday, March 1 (1 p.m. Central). It will be the first outdoor match of the season for the Longhorns at the Caswell Tennis Center.
