Longhorns to compete in three grand final races on Sunday.
SAN DIEGO – Texas won all four races in which it competed Saturday on day one of the annual San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay.
"The team got off to a great start today as all four crews had good rows in their heats," said UT head rowing coach Dave O'Neill. "We've put in some really good work the last few months, and it was important for everyone to race the way they've been training. They did that this morning, and they're now preparing for tomorrow's finals."
The Longhorns' varsity eight advanced to Sunday's grand final in the Jessop-Whittier Cup by holding off USC and winning their three-boat heat in 6 minutes, 35.80 seconds.
UT's varsity four cruised to victory in its five-boat heat and won in 7:48.52, about nine seconds clear of second-place San Diego. The four boat advances to Sunday's Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup grand final.
UT's second varsity eight earned a place in its Sunday grand final by handily claiming its heat Saturday in 7:03.44. Texas also won its heat in the Women's Open division at 7:16.13.
"The competition here is tough, and the Crew Classic is such a great event," O'Neill added. "I expect the racing to be pretty exciting tomorrow."
