Longhorns outlast Wildcats in four-hour match played at outdoor and indoor sites.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas (9-10, 5-3 Big 12) claimed the doubles point and piled up three singles wins in its 4-2 win over Kansas State (8-15, 1-7 Big 12) Friday afternoon. The match, which spanned over four hours due to an 80-minute weather delay, opened on the outdoor courts at Caswell Tennis Center before relocating to the Weller Indoor Tennis Center at the UT Golf Club due to rain.
Texas made short work of K-State in doubles and won at the third and first positions to assume a 1-0 match lead. Sophomore Neda Koprcina and freshman Dani Wagland led off with a 6-1 win over the Wildcats' Laura Hopton and Maria Panaite at third doubles.
UT finished off the point at first doubles where UT All-America junior Breaunna Addison and sophomore Pippa Horn shut out K-State's Carolina Costamagna and Palma Juhasz by a 6-0 count.
K-State won first sets at five of the six singles positions, but the Longhorns held off the Wildcats and yielded only two team points in the singles session. Wagland pushed the Texas lead to 2-0 with her 6-4, 6-3 win over Hopton at sixth singles. K-State sliced the Longhorns' lead to 2-1 lead with a win at fourth singles before heavy rain halted the match and forced the relocation to Weller Indoor.
K-State evened the match at two with a win at first singles shortly after the match resumed at Weller Indoor. Koprcina and Batra dropped the opening sets of their matches at second and third singles at Caswell before taking control and finishing off victories at Weller. Koprcina overpowered Juhasz at second singles and preserved a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win to give Texas the lead for good.
Batra blanked K-State's Bago in the second set at third singles and took the final set by a 6-2 count to close out the Texas win. The remaining match at fifth singles was suspended.
Texas closes out the regular season on Sunday when it hosts Kansas (1 p.m.) at Caswell Tennis Center. Senior Lina Padegimaite will be honored prior to Sunday's contest. The Longhorns open play in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championships next Friday (April 24) in Waco.
