WACO, Texas -- Senior All-Americans Lloyd Glasspool and Søren Hess-Olesen continued their magical run in the NCAA Doubles Championship by defeating host Baylor's eighth-seeded Diego Galeano and Julian Lenz in the semifinals on Sunday, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(3).
Glasspool and Hess-Olesen are the second Texas duo in three years to advance to the NCAA Men's Tennis Doubles Championship final, following 2013 finalists Chirs Camillone and David Holiner.
"To beat Baylor at Baylor in the semifinals takes a great effort, and that's what they gave today," head coach Michael Center said. "The quality of tennis was very high on both sides. We did a great job on our service games, and just played a great third-set tiebreaker when we needed it. Great win. Those guys very are excited to continue playing."
Glasspool and Hess-Olesen quickly jumped out of the gates with a 2-0 lead in the first set. But Baylor responded with three break points to take the opening set, 6-2. In the second set, Texas again jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but maintained its one-break advantage to a 6-4 equalizer.
"We played well in the first two games of the first set, but were pretty nervous overall in the beginning," Hess-Olesen commented. "I wasn't aggressive enough, or taking my time on the serves. I gave them time on my serve, and they're a very good team when they have time. This could have been my last match ever, so I decided to go for it. Lloyd really stepped up and played well. He carried me through the second set."
Neither team backed down in the decisive third set -- both holding serve through 12 games to force a third-set tiebreaker. Glasspool and Hess-Olesen pulled away with a four-point run in the tiebreaker for a 6-2 lead. Glasspool held serve on the final point to clinch a 7-3 win in the tiebreaker.
"Our strategy today was to make a lot of first serves," Glasspool said. "In the first set, we didn't make enough and it hurt us. In the last two sets, we came out a lot stronger, and it seemed to pay off for us."
Glasspool (5) and Hess-Olesen (1) combined for six service aces and held serve in all second- and third-set games. When converting on first-serves, Glasspool and Hess-Olesen won the point nearly 82 percent of the time. The Texas duo won 96 of the 185 total points in the match.
Monday's NCAA Doubles Championship final will be against Texas Tech's 22nd-ranked Hugo Dojas and Felipe Soares. The doubles final begins after singles competition, which is scheduled for 12 p.m. Central at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
The all-Big 12 Conference final on Monday also marks the fourth consecutive Big 12 opponent Glasspool and Hess-Olesen will face in the NCAA Doubles Championship. The Longhorn duo defeated teams from TCU, Oklahoma State, and Baylor to reach the finals against Texas Tech.
"We played (Texas Tech's Dojas/Soares) earlier this season, and it was one of the best matches that we competed in," Hess-Olesen said. "Texas Tech is a very good team and have awesome guys who have played well all season. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow because I think it's going to be a lot of fun. Our coaches know each other well, and we know them well. We always get the best out of each other. It's going to be a fun match tomorrow."
