AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 9 Texas Men's Tennis advanced to the NCAA Championship Second Round by defeating Navy, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at Weller Indoor Tennis Center. The match was moved indoors due to rain.
The Longhorns (20-6) improve to a perfect 21-0 in NCAA Championship matches played in Austin.
Texas started doubles competition with victories on courts one and three to secure the doubles point. UT kept the momentum going in singles competition with decisive wins from fourth-ranked Søren Hess-Olesen on court one, George Goldhoff on court three, and Clement Homs on court five.
"Our theme is 'no free points,' and I thought we did a pretty good job of that today," Head Coach Michael Center said. "We want to try to continue to play better doubles because when we get that doubles point, we are a hard team to beat. In singles, we were on top of them up-and-down the lines. Everyone stayed focused on their court and that is what I was looking for."
Homs clinched the team win for the Longhorns by defeating Navy's (20-11) Walker Sims, 6-1, 6-0, on court five. The Longhorns held first-set leads on all three courts that went unfinished, including freshman John Mee's 6-0, 5-0 lead on court six before play was suspended.
In the round of 32, Texas will face No. 26 California on Saturday at 1 p.m. Central at Caswell Tennis Center. Cal advanced to the second round with a 4-0 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday.
It will be the third meeting in two years between the Longhorns and Golden Bears. Last season, Texas defeated Cal at the ITA National Indoors, 4-2, and the NCAA Championship round of 16, 4-1.
