Sprinter among top collegiate athletes
AUSTIN, Texas – The NCAA Championships are set for next week. The USTFCCA has announced its final women's watch list for the 2015 Bowerman Award, and Texas sprinter Morolake Akinosun makes her debut on the list.
Akinosun won four titles at the Big 12 Conference Championships recently, defending her crowns in the 100 and 200 meters while also running on the victorious 4x100 meter relay and the 4x400 relay. Akinosun qualified for the NCAA Championships in all four events as well.
In the previous watch list announcement following conference championships, Akinosun was listed among the others receiving votes. This time she cracks the top 10 and is officially on the watch list heading into the final meet of the season.
Akinosun ranks third in the NCAA in the 100 meters with a season-best time of 11.00 seconds. She is fifth in the 200 after tying her personal best of 22.68 seconds. The Texas 4x100 squad is ranked No. 6 in the field and the 4x400 team is fifth, looking to defend its title from last year.
The junior has had a strong year, winning three or more events at three different meets, including the Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
Indoors, Akinosun won the 60 meters at the Big 12 Conference Championships and helped Texas win the 4x400 relay at the NCAA Championships.
The final watch list saw two major changes to the top 10 with Texas sprinter Courtney Okolo and Alabama's Remona Burchell dropping off the list after not competing in their individual events at their respective NCAA Preliminary Rounds meets. Akinosun and Florida sprinter Kyra Jefferson are the two additions to the list this time around. Akinosun is the only Big 12 athlete on the watch list.
