Longhorns await either Ole Miss or Texas Tech on Sunday.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 20 Texas (3-2) surrendered the doubles point and three singles matches in a 4-0 defeat to No. 21 Florida (3-0) Saturday at UT's Weller Indoor Tennis Center.
The match was the first of two contests this weekend for Texas as part of the annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend event. The Longhorns move to Sunday's consolation round where it will meet either Ole Miss or Texas Tech at 10 a.m. CT (Weller Indoor).
"Our freshmen are getting after it," said UT head coach Michael Center. "Harrison Scott really fought hard today. Rodrigo (Banzer) just got here, and he was up a break in the third (set) against one of the best freshmen in the country. We've got a lot of work to do, and we don't have time to hang our heads. We've got another tough match tomorrow. I give Florida credit, they did a nice job. "
Florida won doubles matches at the second and third positions to assume a 1-0 match lead. The Gators assumed a 2-0 cushion behind Diego Hidalgo's 6-2, 6-1 win over UT junior George Goldhoff at first singles.
Florida stretched its lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win from Jordan Belga over UT sophomore John Mee at sixth singles. The Gators closed out the 4-0 win by way of Elliott Orkin's 6-4, 7-5 win over UT freshman Harrison Scott at second singles. The remaining matches were abandoned.
