AUSTIN, Texas - Senior Imani Boyette recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and a season-high 17 rebounds, and sophomore Brooke McCarty posted a season-high five three-pointers to propel No. 4/4 Texas past Iowa State, 75-54, in front of 2,853 fans on Wednesday night inside the Frank Erwin Center.
With the victory, Texas (14-0, 3-0 Big 12 Conference) is only five wins away from being the fifth program in history to reach 1,000 wins. In addition, the Longhorns are off to their first 14-0 start since the 1985-1986 season and their first 3-0 Big 12 Conference start since the 2002-03 season. This marks the first time the Horns have beaten the Cyclones since Feb. 9, 2014.
"I thought our team, once again, really got off to a great start. I love our energy right now defensively. In league play, as we begin each game, we seem very focused, defensively in particular on whatever the game plan is that evening," said Texas head coach Karen Aston. "I thought we played really good as a team, really good. I was very pleased, but [Iowa State] is a hard team to play. It's one of those matchups that's been difficult for us in the past, and it was pleasing to be able to defend them a little bit better than we had in the past and attack the areas that were open. I thought we did a pretty good job of that tonight."
Along with her double-double, Boyette had a season-high seven blocks for the game. Senior Empress Davenport posted 10 points and four assists, while junior Brianna Taylor had three steals.
Texas' 11 three-pointers on the night ties for the fourth most in a single game in school history.
As a team, the Longhorns shot 40.8 percent (29-for-71) from the field and 50 percent (11-for-22) from behind the arc. They held the Cyclones to 33.3 shooting percentage (19-for-57) on the night. Texas outrebounded Iowa State, 48-40, and out-blocked the Cyclones, 9-3.
Iowa State (10-4, 2-1 Big 12 Conference) was led by junior Seanna Johnson, who totaled 23 points for the game.
It would be a tight game to start the first, but Taylor would make a layup off a fast break to put the Longhorns in the lead by three (9-6) headed into the first media timeout. Texas would then go on a 14-6 run that featured three-consecutive shots from downtown courtesy of McCarty, senior Celina Rodrigo, and sophomore Ariel Atkins to close out the quarter, 23-12.
The Cyclones would try to battle back on a 6-2 spurt, but Rodrigo would add another three-pointer to make it 28-18 Texas with 4:03 remaining in the half. Texas would be able to keep a healthy margin, never leading by less than seven, to send the Horns into the locker room with a 38-25 advantage.
The Longhorns would struggle to find their rhythm offensively early in the third, but two shots from Boyette would give Texas the 43-30 lead with 4:30 remaining in the quarter. Texas would steadily pull ahead from there, and Davenport would become the fourth player to knock down a three to finish the third, 53-35.
It was a high scoring fourth quarter, and the Longhorns would force a Cyclone timeout after a Kelsey Lang layup pushed the lead to 66-24 with 6:53 remaining in regulation. Texas would lead by as many as 27 after a senior Brady Sanders three-pointer at the six-minute mark. Texas would cruise in the last couple minutes of the game, and a jumper from junior Sara Hattis handed the Horns the game, 75-54.
Up next, Texas will travel to Stillwater, Okla. on Saturday to face Oklahoma State. Tip inside Gallagher-Iba Arena is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on Fox Oklahoma.
